A few weeks ago, my PS rear door lock would fail to lock/unlock using the factory key fob. It can be manually unlocked/locked, and manually opened from inside the vehicle. The noise from outside of the vehicle sounds like nothing is engaging when the alarm button is depressed.

Just yesterday, i have had the exact same issue arise with my backdoor--no movement with the key fob, but able to be opened/closed/locked/unlocked manually from inside. This is exceptionally annoying, as i use my rig in the desert for shooting, and now cannot easily access the back when fully loaded. I've searched, and read the manual, but am not sure what i'm looking for. Any insight would be appreciated.

That is odd. I was going to say battery too, but when my battery dies, that's it...it just doesn't work anymore. Based on what you described it seems intermittent.

Do you have more than one fob? If so, do both fobs do the same thing? It would be good to know so you could possibly isolate the issue to the fob itself or eliminate it from the equation.

If I'm reading this right, he has other door locks responding but not the one indicated. Wouldn't be a "fob" issue if thats the case.

I the back door supposed to unlook/lock with the power door locks?...
Methinks you're missing a few works in key locations in this sentence.

:D
All locks (front DS, PS; rear DS, PS; and hatch) are supposed to unlock with the power locks.

When you say manually unlocked do you mean manually unlocked with the power door lock button?

Be sure to check that you don't have the "child locks" on. Mine has one on the lift gate and tailgate.

Sorry for the delay. Child locks are NOT on. When i say 'manually' i mean i can use my hands to lock/unlock both the back door and the PS rear door. Neither the DS main locks panel on the drivers door, nor the key fob (and i have only 1) will cause the locks to lock/unlock on those two doors only; the rest are fine.

There's a solenoid within the door that throws the lock open/closed that most likely has gone bad. I have changed 3 on my 80 in the past 8 years. Accessible by removing the inside door panel. Cost was about $50 each from the dealer.

Thanks Jim. I just had this happen on my 97 PS door lock. The FSM/past threads had me thinking it was a bigger job than that (I'm a 0.5  mechanic). Chiz, post up fix if you do it before me.

FINALLY got a chance to open up the back door panel to check out what's wrong. Turns out the that the yellow plastic clip that holds the rod connecting to the outside door latch was broken. For reference, 1996 FSM BO18-19. I initially wrapped the vertical rod with a zip tie run through the hole on the actuator assembly. It held a bit, but I could see the friction between the metal and plastic. That damn plastic piece can't cost more than pennies, but CDan indicated that the inner parts are not serviced. Unfortunately, i had to suck it up and bought a new actuator ($143 or so). Now it works great, but i can see how the other plastic pieces in the latch and other areas can get brittle and fail.

Maybe i can do the side door this weekend.

They are actually little motors. Older Toyotas used solenoids, but most after '90 ish all use motors. They go bad because the motors only rotate alittle in each direction (lock/unlock). Usally when I'm at the junk yards I pull a few units. Doesn't matter what model, camery, 4runner, lexus etc. If you have  electrical skill you can change motors in which ever unit is going bad. And you may need to change gears on the motor shaft, becuase they are different for left and right side.
