Hi everyone,

I have done a bunch of reading, searching, looking and listening, on the web and on my truck, to no avail. I would have originally guessed it was a belt, but all are fairly new and this only happens when the truck is in Drive, and idling. Park and Neutral pur like kittens, but once the truck is in gear and idling I hear this VERY faint squealing noise. Anyone ever experienced this? Or know what could be going on?

Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated, even in advance.

I had this issue on my 06 and it was mostly eliminated after a complete front-end brake job. I definitely had the same symptoms - would be a slight squeal in the driveline when in either drive or reverse and while idling.

Noise increase or decrease at all with RPM?
It goes away as soon as I move at all, or increase RPMs. It's possible that the noise is still there, but I can't hear it over the engine...

Is it possible to post some audio of the squeal?
I could try... It's just soooo faint.

Very interesting... I put new pads on a while ago, and everything looked and looks just fine. I'd be interested to know exactly what was causing it on your truck. The first few times I heard it I was parking, and assumed maybe the lot I was on had a slick surface causing my tires to squeal as I turned into the spot. But the other night it was really quiet out and I noticed it when I pulled into my dirt driveway. I could hear it faintly as I came to a stop, then it went away when I put it in Park. I put it in Neutral, then Drive, and it was present in both of those positions. If that explanation helps at all, I'd love some more info from what you heard @flyfish4life.

Thanks to all for the responses so far!

It was a complete front-end brake job, wheel bearings repacked, rotors resurfaced, etc. I believe they take out most of the front-end to do it. As to the noise, very similar to what you describe, I would hear a faint squeal in the driveline while for example, backing out of garage in reverse coming to a stop or coming to a stop in drive (in most cases I would continue to hear it with foot on brake completely stopped in either drive or reverse). In Park, do not recall hearing it. Possibly neutral, just cant remember. It was very intermittent. After the brake job, it is much, much more faint. So much that I barely notice it anymore and in fact, it could be completely gone now.

I also have a possible related (probably unrelated) issue with my fan clutch. When I shut the truck off, I hear a short medium/high-pitched "sneeze" in the fan belt area. Mechanic thought it was likely the fan clutch, but not to worry with it for now. Don't think its related to the squeal, but a possibility I guess. Sorry for the tangent.

No worries on the tangent, I've been wondering the same thing and like I said, belts were the first thing I checked and all seems ok. Thanks for the more detailed description, I'm wondering if a bearing repack will help me out as I'm done with the rest up there. Your issue sounds exactly like mine, so at least I've got something to work with for now.
