Started the sliders a few days ago. I just need to add the rub rail to the drivers side and its done.

Brackets are 1/4" plate built to fit their specific part of the frame so everything is a tight fit. 2x4" .188 wall for the main section, and 1.5" .120 wall DOM for the frame supports and outer rail.

hope you guys like them!

Looking good!

Doing a great job so far. You think there is a strength difference between how you mounted them vs. the standard U bolt thing? I am just curious. I think your's would be stronger, but then again, what do I know?

As usual, I am suitably impressed with the skills :D

Jon

Thanks Jon! Thats what I'm hoping at least. I don't know if it matters or not, but i just wasnt a fan of the u bolt style mounts ive seen on other sliders. I wanted a mount that spread the force out over the frame more than just a 7/16" wide area, and had no hardware or edges hanging down. The brackets were clamped in place, and then tack welded together so they fit nicely where they're mounted on each part of the frame. These seem to be pretty stout so far, but i'll only know for sure when i put them on the rocks.

Well, I can't say that they aren't strong, they supported the weight of my truck @ Deer Valley and took a little abuse. The Ubolt system that is. I guess if there was a problem with the Ubolt system, all the 80s running metaltech sliders would have exposed them. From a cost standpoint, it is probably cheaper to go that way then fab the extra parts. Also, there might be some differences from 80 to 80 and each one would be slightly different in mounting. But, I still like yours :D

Jon

yeah, thats exactly it right there. If they didnt work, then they wouldnt put them on the trucks. And yes, it was a lot more work to make the brackets, but I think it came out ok. I doubt they would just slide on to any other truck like you said, which would make for some angry customers!

Looking good.

Are you going to use the 4 mounting holes just in front of the cats on the passenger side? The set I built for the LX and Slee's use those as mounting points. Also, getting under and around the cats is fun. Looking forward to the finished product.

Jack

Did you go through the frame with those bolts, or are they above the top of the rail?
Nice work.

Jack, yeah I was thinking about mounting it in that location, but I haven't decided yet. I have a few ideas floating around in my head.

Keith, the bolts sit above the frame. I have the almost touching so there's no play up or down, nice and snug.

I really like the u with a bolt at the top frame attachment clean idea...

I welded plates to the frame and then outriggers to the plates to get away from the brakets hanging down..

please keep posting your progress/ideas...

Looks good. I sure wish I had a good straight section of frame from end to end to mount to. Mine turns up on both ends, so I have to mount it more in the center of the slider.

Almost done. Just need to build the skid for the cat. Probably going to have someone dimple die the plate underneath it.

I have the rub rails on too, I didn't get a chance to take a picture of those though.

Everything clears just fine, even though it may not look like it in one of these pics.

Your producing some great things lately. You should be proud.

P.s. I'm still looking for that service manual. I haven't forgotten.

Thanks Jereme! It has been busy in my garage lately, and I think i may need a break.

I totally forgot about it. Let me know if you find it and ill buy it from yah.

X2!
Great job! I love the idea of bending the outrigger around the cat. Have not seen that done. Great engineering.

Ive gotta get a bender. That would make my life SOOOO much easier out in the garage.

coming along nicely!

some of the vendors that mass produce sliders should take a look at yours for some new ideas

of course, make sure you get compensated for that :grinpimp:

Get one Keith! I have the JD2 model 3 and it sweet. I made a bracket for a air/hydro ram and now it works with a compressor or manually. The ram is from an engine hoist. Here's the bender.... I wish I could get the model 32, but that came out after I bought mine a few years ago.

Thanks Jon. I've seen other designs out there, and they dont look very stout. Some that just rely on one piece of sqaure tubing and one bolt for each outrigger. It just doesnt seem very strong to me, or maybe i just have a habit of over-engineering things! :grinpimp:

Over engineering is putting to much materials and time where it doesn't count.

Erring on the side of excess in the case of sliders is a different category.

Be interested to see how much the tubing will bend when you drop it on a rock.

It will spring back but that bent tube with out more reinforcement or another support I would think would give.
Beautiful work BTW
