Anyone come across a slide in “pod” for a trailer…sort of like a truck slide in but designed to take up the foot print of a utility trailer?

I was thinking the idea of an all aluminum pod capable of supporting a roof top tent or two…capable of being separated from a utility trailer…might be a cool product.

You’d retain the use of your utility trailer for kayak hauling or yard work, but also have a robust frame/chassis for attaching the “living room” of a camper and the gigantic bed space of a fold out roof top tent.

A couple photos of things I’ve come across

At the top of the economic pile, there are dozens of companies making slide ins now.
But this one has always been my favourite.

I kind of did that with my trailer and I would guess a lot cheaper than others.
I can use it as a flatbed, stake bed or put my camp box on it.

After talking to an aluminum welder…and a screened in patio guy that builds roofs out of structural insulated foam/metal composite panels, I think a wooden framed box with a tent on top of it (or multiple tents) might be the best path forward.

Wood is relatively inexpensive and easy to work with.

Would it be possible for you to briefly explain how you place this tent pod onto your trailer (and remove it)?

I thought, oh lets look at the 4WheelCamper. They were around $22-24K last time I looked. So much for that.
But as far as weight vs value they are still worth a look. If I were to consider a home made option I'd be looking at
these for ideas. They should make a more Ute style without the cabover bed design, IMO.
Expedition Portal will in all likelihood have a huge section on these.

I hope this answers your questions.

The box is made from Hickory wood, tongue and grooved, I use TotalBoat penetrating sealant and a 2 parts apoxsee for the glue, covered with a TotalBoat spar varish and then bolted to the trailer via 4 bolts. I get 3 other guys and we lift the box off and the I put it on saw horses or something. It would be nice to have lift in the garage for this.

Then I have a metal frame a local welder built for me. It is based off a motorcycle lift, with a electric actuator to lift or lower the tent, I have a ECO battery pack in the trailer. This was done to keep it lower going down the road and raise to attach the tent annex.

The RTT is mounted to the metal frame lift. The frame cross bars where built for this based on what the manufacture recommended. The Tent is easy to lift off and on, 2 people. I store it on a couple of saw horses, again it would be great to have a lift inside a garage.

That’s very interesting. It’s like a mini popup camper.
