I bought a reman OEM alternator and I didn't know they don't come with new VRs. Silly me.

Now looking in the EPC, I see there are two listings: a Standard type and an IC type, with overlapping model year coverage.... what's the diff, and is one better than the other, if they're interchangeable ?

And searching, people say they're cheap, but I'm seeing over a 100 bux for either one. $OR sells re-manufactured VR, how are those?

Thanks...

I think the two you are seeing is a internal one and then a external one. They mount differently but I have not seen any external ones on the OEM alternators but they might be out there. It is hard to believe it would not come with the VR. I need a new internal VR for a spare and was going to get one too. You should be able to get a internal one at AutoZone for around $25.

The standard type regulator is also called a Tirrill regulator. It's a separate box about the size of your fist that has three to six wires going to it. The IC regulator is a little integrated circuit (I think) that mounts directly to the side of your alternator. I don't know about the Land Cruiser Tirrill regulators, but on other vehicles, these have something like bimetal switches in them that open and close to regulate the voltage. They do go out of adjustment. The IC doesn't have any moving parts, no switching contacts to foul, etc. Most importantly if you had the IC before, you probably don't have the wiring for the Tirrill.

when i bought my reman unit from YOTA it did not come w/ an ic regulator i had to transfer the old one.i load tested it and found to be working.:D john

Thanks for the input.

I thought it was kinda whack that they don't come with new VR's, but at least I know it's normal....
