Hi folks, searched and found quite a bit with "ski" and "rack" but not quite what I was looking for, please forgive me if I missed it.

My rig is a 2017 GX with 38K miles. Just starting my build (have an OME 2" lift in, purchased TRD Pro Wheels and ordered Fallen Wildpeaks AT3/W in 275/70/17)
Ski season is fast approaching so I need some racks! I've checked out all the options listed on GXOR and can't find a rack other than the Front Runner (which I had on my 4Runner and don't like) that sells ski attachments. I can likely go with some cross bars and either get actual ski holder or a low profile Yakima box that comes on/off pretty easy (would just keep it on for ski season).
But I wouldn't mind a full size rack for other uses, like a RTT. So, did I miss a rack option (love Prinsu but no ski attachments)? Or has anyone installed a cargo box and if so what cross bars worked well?

Your thoughts and expertise are much appreciated.

Love my Gamiviti rack: Roof Racks — Gamiviti - https://www.gamiviti.com/roofracks
  • No problem with my full size iKamper RTT on it for over 4 years.
  • Six mounting points along the roof.
  • Low profile.
  • Access of/through sun roof.
  • Can add a LED light bar.
  • Custom sizes, e.g.: full length, half length, etc.
  • Tim is great to work with.
You can check out my rig with it here starting at post #4: Builds - R2M 2013 Lexus GX 460 Overland / Overlander Build - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/r2m-2013-lexus-gx-460-overland-overlander-build.1104719/

Some of the Thule rack attachments have an option to mount using a stud that slides into a T-Track slot on some of their bars. I think you could find a similar T-slot stud that would fit into any of the 8020 extrusion style platform racks.

Instructions here show the T-track studs being used:

I run a skinny cargo box on a Prospeedrack full rack. Uses standard 8020 extrusion t-slot bolts to mount and sits relatively flush. I opted for a cargo box over standard mounts (Yakima, Thule, Front Runner etc.) as I wanted them out of the weather and also to be fully lockable inside for longer trips. It also does double duty for cargo for road trips.

Depending on your area, you can get them used for not much money. Mine was $200 and had some flaws, but nothing not correctable with some plastic weld/epoxy and some gorilla tape.

Do you have a link to the T-slot bolts you used?

Worth knowing that 18-8 SS has only about 2/3 the strength of a grade 5 steel bolt (70/80ksi vs 120 ksi). Just gotta make sure to make the click sound a little sooner when using your calibrated torque arms

I've been running the Rhino Rack stuff for a few years now and it's been super easy to adjust to my needs. I run the Pioneer platform in the summer and the Vortex crossbars in the winter. With the Vortex bars, you can either use a cargo topper or standard ski racks. The bars, and the platform, use standard strut channel nuts in the slots. So for my Thule ski rack, I just replaced the hardware with some M6 hex head screws and some M6 strut channel nuts.
