I have been riding SS mtb's for 3 years now and its my only rig and i will never go back to a geared bike again. The up keep is far less expensive and easily relaced. NO worrying about shifting problems or what gear for what hill...your mind is free to enjoy the ride. If you want to go a cheap route get a cheap bike and turn it into a SS bike. If you decide you like it then go out and purchase a SS only frame. When you do go Steel and not Ti or Alum. Surly bikes are great SS frames. Cro-moly frames that will last you a lifetime. My frame is well over 8 years old and rides like a dream.

Just cause you don't have as many gears as your buddies you can stil ride that same trails with a different size freehwheel in the rear. PLus if your able to ride those same trails as your buddies do on their geared bikes you'll get mad props for being a stud.

Good luck on your search.....

Check out MTBR.com, there are multiple forums. As others suggested and it appears you followed, skip a SS for your first MTB.

I have a SS but also an FR rig...
use it wisely and the SS will make you stronger in a much shorter period of time.. :):)
Use it on the wrong trail and it will bite yah on the ass :D:D :flipoff2:

If you are new to the sport def...... stick with a gear bike......

I wonder if he ever traded up to an SS?
