I went to local REI last week for some shopping and saw this device: Rightline Gear Moki Ascent Car Door Step

Maybe you are familiar with it, but it was new to me, and I was intrigued when I saw it. Great idea but does it actually work? Does it bend the body metal where it rests? Given that it only has two positions does its geometry matches the truck's? Does it bend itself under 200+ weight?

I tested it and it works as advertised on our trucks and enable me to reach far into the middle of the roof. That was not too hard to do in the back even without the device by climbing on the rear tires, but that option is not available in the front, and when tires are muddy, I prefer not to climb on them.
The item is well built from solid metal. The orange plastic is just the cover.
The protection for the body paint is via thick elastomeric material providing a little bit of cushion but firm enough for stability and support.
Just make sure you wipe the paint surface and the device pad before use so there are no scratches due to dust/sand/dirt.

Not a replacement for a roof ladder but certainly a replacement for a step or tire ladders.

I got one added to the bunch of stuff that always stay in the truck.

Picked up something similar through TEMU, "Heavy-Duty Universal Car Roof Access Tool". Use it to get stuff up and down on top, works fine, but I am always a little nervous with all my weight on it. I am sure the REI one is more reliable, just 4 x the price. Also by having it orange you are less likely to close the door on it.

Good timing. I was strapping an outfitter table and oars on top of my raft frame the other day on my 100, and I ended up standing on the door latch bracket with my toes to reach the center of the roof. It felt very sketchy (in flip flops), and this looks like a great solution! Thanks for sharing.
