I'm not real sure. Previous owner did it. There are no electronics to it, it's all mechanical and fairly simple. So far it has worked well.

Is it direct injection, or is it a throttle body? Direct injection would entail placing fuel injectors directly into the cylinders. The 22R was carbureted and the 22RE had an indirect electronic injection setup with injectors in the lower intake manifold.

It is direct injection. I have a book from zukoffroad that came with it. It tells how to install and troubleshoot it. Also lists all of the part numbers. All parts are from I believe 80s VW's and Audi's.

That's very interesting and something I didn't think possible without some crazy head modifications. I will definitely have to look into this.

If you find anything let me know. At one time I found some threads on Pirate about it but couldn't find it last time I looked. I don't know a whole lot about it to be honest other than the little I've read in the book.

Oops, I spoke wrong and actually just found the threads. It's actually multi port mechanical injection. If you search Bosch CIS 22r, some info should come up.

Ok, that clears things up a bit. Direct injection (as I think of it) would be technically challenging and crazy expensive. I was thinking that if you had one, it was probably some proof of concept built by a performance shop and you may have something very rare. Either way, its good to get away from the carb. I've seen them cause tons of problems on the trails.

It has worked well so far and seems fairly simple to work on. Hopefully won't have too many problems out of it. If I were to do the build I do think I would go propane instead.

Greetings afarm, nice rig, nice to meet a fellow mini guy.

Welcome! Sweet truck hope to see it in person.

Yes i knew you guys would be intrigued by this injection set up. Never heard of it before.
Welcome Austin, we will have to get you out with this group sometime.

I've never been out with this group.

I also don't really have a drivable rig at the moment.

Howdy Andy. You live pretty close to me, with similar interests. I'm in Cary, have a '97 FZJ-80 that I camp (overland) with around midwest, sometimes with wife and kids. I just got a Smittybilt rooftop tent, and I'm looking forward to try out this summer.
You won't need much of your nice kit around these parts unless you're willing to beat the S#!T out of your rig at a private park, or take trips to Colorado, etc. That's not a criticism just an observation/heads up-- I've done both of those (beat up my '80 when it was newer, and took trips to CO). Now, I just travel the midwest (mostly UP Michigan and Wisconsin) to camp, fish, bike, hike and boat, and the truck just gets me from here to there. I.e. I'm a wussy wheeler, and just lurk and live vicariously on IH8.
You may be interested in upoverland.org as well (mostly dead now, but still a pulse).
Later!
