Here is my problem.

When i put my 2000 LX in reverse my side view mirrors automatically angle themselves down to see the curb/road behind me. Upon putting it in drive, the driver side mirror returns to the proper place. However, the passenger side mirror stays in the down position. This is not a motor in the mirror problem though, because i can use the in cab controller to maneuver the mirror back into position. Any ideas on what is causing this and how to fix it????? It is very annoying, and dangerous, to forget to put it back into place and get a few miles down the road and go to change lanes and have no view.

Thanks for the help.

Common problem and there is a TSB on it. Sometimes the mirror is the problem, sometimes the mirror ECU and sometimes something else. The best and cheapest fix is to leave the mirror control in the middle position (L-M-R). This defeats the auto-down mirror feature.

As hoser said. The TSB is L-SB-0108-09. Basically the ecu and actuators would typically be replaced to fix the issue. Interestingly your vehicle is a 2000 and doesn't fall into the 2003-2007 TSB, but it's likely the same root cause and as hoser said you should be able to keep it in middle position so you don't get the auto-down feature.

"Some 2003 - 2007 model year LX 470 vehicles may exhibit a condition where one or both of the outer rear view mirrors will not automatically return to the proper position when shifting from reverse to drive. A newly designed mirror ECU is available to correct this condition. For 2003 - 2006 model year vehicles it is also necessary to replace the mirror actuators. This condition does not affect the manual operation of the exterior mirrors from the adjustment switch."

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

I have the same problem on my 2001 LX. Been doing it for years.
I just leave it in the middle position.

This is an old thread, but I just did a search on this, because I'm having a similar problem.
My mirrors usually stay how I have them set, but intermittently they do not move down when in Reverse. I love this feature and not having it is ridiculously annoying since I use my big-a$$ truck as a daily driver.
With my rear view mirrors currently set for driving I can see very little below the mirrors viewing angle. This includes, but is not limited to, seeing cars behind me whilst attempting to parallel park (I do this on a weekly basis). The automated rear view mirror adjustment in Reverse makes parallel parking simple. Otherwise, it's just a complete guessing game as to the proximity of the vehicle behind me.
Will this TSB fix my issue and if so, will Lexus take care of it for free since it's a TSB?
And in order for this automation to function you must leave the interior control switch in the L or R position and not the middle position? That just doesn't seem logical to me. The middle position should be solely for avoiding any unintended adjustments to the L or R mirror settings.

TIA,
Aj

The TSB should fix your issue, but worse case scenario is replacing both mirror actuators (if you can get seperate from the whole housing) and the ECU that controls the mirrors. I would think it's unlikely Lexus will pay for the repair as you are out of warranty, unless you have stellar service history at your dealer and want to ask them for a goodwill for this particular issue. Maybe you could sell them on the fact that you feel it's a safety issue. I'd save asking for help from Lexus for something bigger... like a transmission if ever needed. Yes, the setting to disable the feature is the middle position.

This thread is ancient and it completely saved my butt.

I just bought an LX 470 and during the test drive things were good, but after I got the car home I noticed this tendency for my mirrors to fold down in reverse and not come back up. I thought, oh great.

Sure enough, when I left the mirror adjustment switch on L or R, it seemed to cause this problem. However if I adjusted the mirrors and then left the switch in the center position, it would not attempt to drop the glass at all. If I use the R mirror to parallel park, I'll just make sure to flip the switch to the center again.

Thanks a million!
