Hello,

After a while I am finally posting this.

As you possibly know, the 70 Series instrument panel has a couple of slits on each side. According to the manual, these are intended to defrost the windows. It turns out they are not connected to the ventilation system, as I discovered when trying to have air circulating out of them.

Some days it is cold enough here for condensation to build up on the windows, blocking the rearview mirrors. So I decided to have at least the driver's side hooked up.

It turns out my Cruiser was missing a piece, called Side Defroster Duct in the parts catalog.

Enter the Toyota parts guy. Part Number No. 55970-90K00.

A label close-up for reference.

A closer look at the duct. Note the production date, November (?) 1984, as well as the lip. It fits within a receptacle in the panel.

Out with the panel. Note the cap in the piping where the side duct connects.

Hello,

The plug is out.

A closer look.

I added a mesh in the outside end, just in case. On the other hand, it might help keeping dust out. I applied Teflon tape on the other end for a tight seal.

Now the window can be defrosted quickly on a cold day.

As the instrument panel was torn apart, I took the chance for another small improvement. Details on the next post.

Hello,

As mentioned above, I took the chance to take the two driver's side main ventilation ducts out.

I cleaned them and the coated them with aluminum tape for better insulation. This is the left duct.

This is the right duct. Sorry, just one picture.

It did not end here. When I was finished, all the ducts were coated and installed; I guess the bug bit. Sadly, no pictures.

The coating helped. Cool air now blows colder, and hot air blows warmer. I should have done this before, I guess.

Thanks for this. Added to my list of things to check/do when I tear my dash apart (again).

Hello,

@Collin80: I am glad you found it useful.
