Hi, I've been using the Shell Rotella T 15W-40 conventional oil on my 92 FJ80 for a while now. I just realized that the Shell T6 5W-40 full synthetic oil is not really that much more expensive than the conventional oil that I've been using and it is cheaper than a lot of other synthetic oil out there. Is the T6 5W-40 any good? I use my Rig as a daily driving weith occasional off roading. Beside being synthetic oil, how would you compare this to Rotella T 15W-40 oil

Thanks in advance

I'm using T6 5w 40 in my 91 FJ80 and couldn't be happier, great price, great oil.

15w-40 seems like high viscosity? Isn't 5w-30 what Toyota recommends?
This is from the FAQ. I am nowhere near smart enough to know all of this:

The 5w-30; 10w-30 recommendation are because of US CAFE mileage standards. Same engine overseas recommends 40 & 50 weight for warm and hot weather. That said, you will not harm the motor using 30 weight oils, but will likely lower wear slightly and give an increase margin of safety under hard running conditions with a 40 weight.

I've used it on my 80 here in NC for a while and I like it. It takes a little longer for it to warm up on cold days and it gives me higher oil pressure if thats good or bad..

My rig likes it. The bonus to syn is that it lasts longer. Opinions vary, but syn is good for 2-3x as long as dyno. That makes the cost a wash and it's less work.:D

I'd be interested in how synth keeps the oil from getting dirty for 3x as long. It will flow better longer, but it'll be some dirty s*** by then. Of course, that depends on how often 3x is. 9000 or 21,000?

Stick with 5W-30 or maybe 5W-40 on a high mileage engine in hot weather.

Nows the time to try the Rotella. On sale at Advance Auto cheap.

I've been using it for a few years. i usually change the oil twice a year (Spring and Fall) - i drive around 10k miles per year.....

Wow.. I usually change my oil and filter every 3000 +/- miles I know that is more often than what the factory manual says but I like doing it at around every 3000 miles. I am leaning towards the Rotella T6 5W-40 on my next oil change

You should spend some time reading oil posts on here. You are really just throwing money down the drain. Unless you're hauling a trailer through NYC for 3000 miles there's no compelling reason to change your oil at that interval. But on another note, the oil companies and Jiffy Lube must really love you!

I use Rotella T6 in my Liberty Diesel. Factory interval is 6,500. I got a Blackstone test and they said I could go more miles than that. Oil was pretty clean at 6,500. I use dyno in the LC because it seems to slow down the oil leaks.

I run the 5w-40 here in CO, as we have temps anywhere from -20 (where the 5w is really useful) up to 100+ (where the 40 is useful). This way I don't have to change oil for seasons, as I run about 10k on a change. The rotella also stopped my drip on the rear main at least until the oil is ready for a change, then it drips a bit again.

If it never got that cold here, I'd run maybe 10-40. If it never got that hot, I'd run 0-30. But the 5w40 is a great weight for mixed seasons/conditions.

s*** collection is the same but 80s run very clean. syn retains viscosity longer than dyno.

I've been running it in my diesel LC for a couple of years. It gets down to -40°C here sometimes in the winter (and +36°C in summer) so I need the synthetic to get it started. 15W40 dino oil is too thick at those temps. I run about 10000km between changes.

Thanks for your advice... I dont use Jiffy Lube or any other lube place. I dont trust ANYONE doing my oil change. I can probably do oil change every 5000 miles but twice a year or once a year oil change, no thanks.. maybe with the new cars now these days. My oil gets dirty quick enough to change oil every 3000 miles
