Should I swap my GX for an LX?

Loaded question, but I could use some advice. I have an '05 GX470 in really nice shape, with 120k miles. I love the car.

An '04 LX popped up locally, and I could buy it for what I could get for the GX. But the LX is 200k miles and not quite as clean as my GX. It is a one owner car that went to the Lexus dealership every 5k miles and has never been off road.

Both trucks are from the South and have never seen salt. Zero rust anywhere.

I have no experience with an LX, never driven one. I am attracted to the extra room and the fact that it's a, well, Landcruiser.

Will I miss the VVT engine of the GX?

For those tempted to say "own both", I have an FJ as well and I do not want three cars.

I would love some input from those here who may have experience with both vehicles.

Thanks!

I’d keep the GX. Your GX is cleaner with 80k less miles. Should be a no-brainer.

Agree, keep the GX. The LX has 35 less HP and is a heavier vehicle with even worse fuel economy than a GX. I would only suggest a LX if you need the extra space (i.e., family hauler) above that of a GX. Or, if the deal on the LX is a smoking one, buy it and flip it.

I’m on the opposite side of these dudes. I’d take the lx without thinking twice. More room. I think they look much better in my opinion. Vvti means absolutely nothing. I’ve had both motors and shouldn’t even be considered a factor. Better rear end. Just better overall.

35 horsepower (15% more) is not absolutely nothing. It's pretty easy to hear/feel the VVTI kick in my 2UZ; when it does I always think about how slow the GX would be without that extra power. I think going to 15% less power and 700 lb more curb weight would make for a pretty slow vehicle, especially considering a VVTI GX is no powerhouse to begin with.

I owned an 07 before my current 03. The 07 wasn’t near as built as my 03 is now which is carrying much more weight. All I’m saying is if the reason for buying or not buying something is related to 35 hp that’s a really poor factor in my opinion. Obviously that’s my opinion but I’ve never once said man I really miss that little bit of power.

I've had both. 06' LC and 06' GX. I do miss the 100 series looks, tailgate, size and tank-like feel. However, the gx feels like a rocket compared to the LC. Both had the vvti engine. I currently drive the GX and it's enjoyable. If i decide i needed the extra size again, I'd just save a bit more for a 200 series.

I’d say if you are:
- Carrying more than 4 passengers, or
- Wanting a smoother ride, or
- Needing more cargo capacity, or
- looking for more durability

then go with the 100. I had one before the GX. Great vehicles. Look underneath and you’ll see the dramatic difference in beefiness of the components. I felt much less beat up after a long highway ride.
But it is bigger for daily duties and just feels heavy driving.
Both great but just depends on what you’re looking for.

And yes, I wish the GX had a tailgate like the 100. It is very very useful.

If you really need the additional space than a LX makes sense. otherwise im not sure i would trade for 80k
