Is anyone running a different shock than the OME L shocks on their 80 in combination with j springs? It seems the compressed length for the L shocks is too short (just from bump stop lowering recomendations). I don't know if there is one with similar valving to the OME but has different travel lengths. I know they have done their homework matching the shock to the weight and ride of the 80, just wondering if there is another shock that will not need bumpstop mods.

Speaking of bumpstops, why does the cruiser have two sets per axle. One set in the coil and another that hits the axle tube?

How's that for a thread hijack? :D

Fax, some of us have lowered our bumpstops mainly due to bad damage if not done from the tires being bigger than the lift would ideally see. For me, this was a decision I made to keep the truck as low as possible while going to 36's. End result is I dig the set up even though at full turn My tires rub the front control arms which are fatter than stock.

Darwood, they don't have 2 sets of bump stops. The cone inside the spring is more like a dampener and the true bump stop is on the frame rail. That said, as far as I know, only some 93 and some 94 had the front bumpstops. Later years had the tapped holes for them, but Toyota didn't put them on. Hmm, so much for the Toyota Production System being the forerunner to Six Sigma :D

I think most of the people here that are running bump stops it is because they have larger tires. Or I am mistaken?

I am not running J springs but I have a custom 6-6.5” lift that I got about 5 years ago in Venezuela and lets say resources were limited. Getting at the time an OME lift kit would have cost me in Venezuela over $1500 when here the cost of the same kit was $700. So we improvised a little, thats how I ended up running Ford F-750 shocks. I most say that I really like them, they work great and you get way more travel from them that from the OME L shocks, also they were cheap I got all 4 of them in Venezuela for about $ 50. Another reason why I got them it is cuz I good friend of mine that had them recommended them, he used to have 3 ranchos 5000 on each wheel and he used to brake them on constant basis. Obviously he abused them a lot but he changed to this shocks and never again had troubles (he has a 70 series that weights more than my 80 so imagine).

I must advice you that these shocks are long, one of my other buddies has a 70 series SO with OME so he has between 7” to 8” of lift and he was not able to run them because as I said they are LONG. They would need some modifications to make them fit in the rear, but what we did was we cut the mounts from my old shocks and fit them to these ones. I don’t know if this will work for you but I thought I would let you know just in case it helps.

In case you are not familiar with the F 750 here is a pic.

sorry, here it is
