Ok, so 8 years ago I cut off the IFS on my 4Runner and some friends helped me swap in a solid axle. At the time, mostly due to running out of time that weekend, we did not brace my shock hoops. Over the next 8 years, I thought about doing it, but it was never at the top of my list, and since I've never learned to weld, it never got done. I've wheeled the truck pretty hard at times over those 8 years. On Saturday at the 4Runner Jamboree at Rausch Creek, the lack of a brace on the passenger side shock hoop finally bit me in the rear. The good news is that I was able to make it back to camp and drive up onto the trailer, so it could've been a lot worse.

Looks like I'm gonna need to enlist the services of a welder before I go wheelin' again.

Ahhhhh, it's only a flesh wound. Glad you were able to get it back to the trailer without a hassle.

Yep, fairly easy fix. The timing of it was perfect, if it was gonna happen. I was done wheelin' for the weekend, and was headed back to camp when I noticed a vibration, like something was rubbing on something. Got out and checked and saw the hoop rubbing on the tire. I was pretty close to camp, so I just took it nice & easy on the way back.

Bring it on over Allen! I'm happy to wrench on about anything that doesn't involve 90wt at this point. Besides, I still have to get you your 90W pump back!!!

Thanks man! I'll be in touch. Jay suggested plating the frame, then drilling a couple holes through the plate and frame near where the shock hoop will attach and putting a "rosette" weld around the hole to help secure the plate in the middle. Then weld on the hoop and add a brace or 2. Thoughts?

I would certainly plate the areas where the hoop attaches to the frame. Bracing is the way to go as well.

It'll buff out.

I was thinking either duct tape or some Gorilla glue.

That must be one of those SUPER bungees :D. Glad it wasn't any worse.

That was just to keep the shock off the tire while I took it off the trailer and parked in the driveway. Clearly I would use at least a ratchet strap for a permanent fix. :p

Call me Allen and we'll see when we can work on this thing dude!

Will do. Are you off work on Monday?

UPDATE

Many thanks to Ramon for his welding skillz, the frame damage has been repaired and the shock hoop reattached.

Please excuse the blurry cell phone pics....
