Is there supposed to be a backlight on this thing? My 2002 Tacoma has one. I took it apart and didn’t see anything but it was hard to see under there.

I searched and am only finding threads about replacing gear indicator lights for the instrument cluster on the dash.

Yes, it comes on with the head lights.
Its a tiny clear bulb with a green poly slip cover.

One of my pics from this thread shows the bulb

On my LHD, it is accessible from the drivers side once you lift the console. There is a black socket that twists to remove. I used this part number bulb: 90981-11018. That is a clear bulb, you may be able to transfer your green bulb cover over to it (or puchase it separately).

yes

its a tiny peanut bulb. you can replace just the bulb with a standard parts store bulb, and transfer the green cover over, or buy the full bulb/socket from the dealer.

I used this bulb from O’Reilly. It fits, but if you wiggle it, it breaks the circuit and stops illuminating. Took some patience to get it to stay on once inserted. A replacement from Toyota would probably be better.

The condom didn’t make any discernible difference. I tried it on and off. I like it off a little better, the light is just a bit more even and bright.

Easiest way to replace:

(1) remove the four screws holding the trim to the shifter console.

(2) lift up on the rear part of the console, and look under the shifter. You’ll see a black cable. Follow it up under the shifter and twist the plastic housing counter clockwise to free the bulb housing.
