she is wanting to die on me...

ok guys, a little update. when i got home yesterday i tried to start her and got nothing. No charge nothing...this was after i replaced the fuel pump so she now has one of those. So i pulled the alternator (ya'll said this might be the issue and i dissagreed) and took to autozone and had it test and guess what....IT FAILED. You bastards! Ya'll were right and i was way off...i should of listened the first time. So i had the alt rebuilt today by a local auto shop that i have had alts rebuild by before and they do a great job. Got it rebuilt with new brushes and bearings for $54. Not bad i think. So i am going to put it on in the morning and see what happens.

Ok, i installed the rebuilt alt today and i still had the issue of starting up. I had to hold down the accelerator and crank it and it finally started. Kicked alot of black and grey smoke out the back but then went away. But it did the same thing today. Once i came to a stop rpms dropped and she wanted to die. But i kept her alive and once i got on the hwy she ran great...then i exited and came to a stop and brakes were very hard to push in, steering got super stiff and she just died. I can't even get her started again. It seems fuel related but also electrical related. Thoughts of what it could be? I am at a loss on this one.

You are working your way through the gambit. How is the power when it is running. Does it have good acceleration ( for a 60) or does it feel underpowered? I feel like you may have more than one problem.

Starting problem could be related to timing. IF its off it can be very hard to get started, but you should also have a loss of power on the top end too.

Dying when you idle down can be several things you have addressed. Are you sure you have good battery contact and a good battery, and the ground is clean. You can get a good reading but still not get good power if the cables are bad.

Still need to know if it has good power or if its cranky all the way through the rpm band

it has good power. New battery and terminals, rebuilt alt.

I dont know what to tell you. Vac leak can cause it to die like we said but I cant think of anyother one thing that would let you have top end power but loose it when you idle down. It has just about got to be electric related (includes timing). Check out the timing and go from there.

Ok, i have been toying with it being carb related and i think it is. Since i couldn't get it started after it died on me today i just went to autozone and got some starter fluid and sprayed some down in it and she fired right up. So i believe my accelerator pump is bad. I have a spare 87' rebuilt carb in my garage i am going to put on today when i get home and hopefully that will do that trick.

another "I had a similar problem"

My experience was a vacuum leak internal to the carb inside the bowl, I replaced it with a used (but better condition) carb and she runs great now. The fuel under power was sealing off the leak where the low fuel amounts at idle caused the vacuum to occur.

*Not Recommended for any extended time* but I could drive mine with the choke, slightly pulled. Just enough to keep the rpms about 1000 at idle.

EDIT: guess I should've waited a few minutes, you were headed to the carb replacement anyway.

There is a little screen where the gas line fitting goes in to the carb. That screen plugged up twice (with new fuel filters) when there was crud in my tank. However, unlike yours, mine got so bad that it wouldn't run at all.

You going to be in town this weekend? Should be there on Sunday. If I don't have to work.

I'll be around, drop me a PM if you head this way - don't spend a holiday weekend travelling if you don't have to though. I was kidding with ya and posted that from my phone, the smiling face didn't show up.

I will be headed towards you in the next few weeks. I could drop it your way. :)

SHE LIVES!!!!

I replaced the carb today with a rebuilt carb i have had in my garage for the last 2 years. Took the old one off and put the new one on. Corrected the vac piping , sprayed some started fluid in it and after a couple of seconds she started right up and sounded great. She sounded like a new truck. I am going to replace all the vac pipes cause i noticed all of them are in bad shape. But i am just happy she is running again.

Congrats!

Have fun with the vac lines, I did that before replacing my Carb. 41 feet I think it is of the smaller line.

From experience, replace one at a time, otherwise the spaghetti diagrams in the FSM become very familiar. :)
