everytime i come to a stop sign or light my rpm's go all the way down and the charge light comes on and the truck dies. Once i hold the accelerator down and crank it it takes about 4 seconds and she is running again but until i come to another stop sign. Is this fuel related? I am thinking fuel pump but i don't know. I put some gas in her today and while i was removing the gas cap it almost blew off due to pressure.

A little history on the truck...this is my brother-in-laws and he let it sit for about a year and while it sat it didn't have a gas cap on it and water would go down to the tank. Well when we tried and crank it we got nothing. So we drained the tank and there was about 3 gallons of water in it. Once all the water came out the gas started to come out so we put the drain bolt back on and poured some gas in the carb and she fired right up. I have replaced the fuel filter and did a complete tune-up with the exception of the timing.

now i am leaning to the fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator. Would either of these cause what i am describing. Some days she runs with zero issues and some days she has this problem. Where would you start? This is my DD until my Fj40 is up and running so i am at a lost. luckily i commute to work on my surly a couple of days a week and today is one of those days. Thoughts?

Anyone?

Sounds like the fuel cut solenoid. Can you confirm that is working?

I haven't checked that. Where is that located?

I would start with the battery and alt. Get a volt meter and see what your putting out. You say it is at stop lights. Does it start right up in the morning and has trouble after it warms up. Is it this way all the time once you start it. The fact it runs good as long as it is under power leads me to think charging system.

After she is sitting overnbight i can go out and she fires right up. 2 pumps on the gas and she's good. On the hwy she drives fine but once i slow down to a stop my RPM's go down below 200 and the charge light comes on.

Several thought on this. When you first start it the engine will run at higher Rpm's to warm up. Then it kick down. This is what makes me think it is charge related. Once it slows down there is not enough power to run the truck. Another possibility is the idle is set way to low or the timing is off but those are odd items. I would start with the volt meter. I have never had a idle problem be fuel related when it ran good under power, but that is just my experience. Once you verify that your batter is good and your alt is working correctly then you can move on to other ideas. Also check you connections on the battery. If it is not getting a good signal it can cause this. When the trucks rpms drop down to a certain level then your alt will not put out a charge and if your battery or connection is bad then there is no power to run the truck. How is that for a ramble

Probably not fuelpump or cut-off solonoid or anything. Sounds like it needs a good tuneup with the inclusion of timing. I can't do a tuneup without timing it. Probably time it 20 or 30 times during a tuneup....
Adjust the valves, adjust the carb idle speed, time it, adjust the carb idle speed, time it, try the idle mixture screw, repeat until you're happy. Time it by light, time it by vacuum, time it by ear. Ear is the least reliable.

Hey Rek, the battery is brand new and i am getting the correct amount of juice. When she is about to die the cahrge light comes on but i don't see a drop the in the voltage.

Then i am probably moving on to tune-up / timing like above.

The same thing happened to mine (And I mean exactly, ran fine until coming up to a stop--unless I set the hand throttle to keep the rpms up). This might sound weird, but I'd check all the vaccuum lines for leaks. Mine had a big crack in the corregated part of the main intake hose. I fixed it and those idle problems went away.

I always forget about vaccuum problems cause i removed all my smog but that makes since. It goes back to the idle being off and a vac leak could cause that.

X - 2 on the vacuum lines.

Then go for a tune up.

(I hope you do not find out that your smog pump is trying to seize up on you)

Well i have replaced the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, batter, pvc, grommet, air filter, oil change, fuel filter so i have done my tune-up with the exception of the timing which i am going to do in the morning.

x2 on the air intake hose (flexible part)...

after i changed my air filter, my truck idled like crap and of course after a full tuneup and it still ran like crap, i then found out i cracked the bottom part of the flexible air intake hose. Replaced the hose and the truck runs like a champ.

Yep vacuum leaks. I had a 62 last week that when you stepped on the brake it would idle down and die. Some fool put washers between the master cylinder and the brake booster. Yah think that was a wise decision?

Hey if you get that thing to where it will run come by the house. We needed to talk about the 2F anyway's may as well do something while we are at it.

ok guys...i just went out to start the truck and it was like the carb was starving for fuel...i pumped 3 times like normal and nothing. Good charge and everything so its not electrical related. i held the accelerator pedal all the way down and she almost started. I am leaning towards the fuel pump more and more. When i got out of the truck i smelled gas alot more then normal. thoughts? i am still adjusting the timing tomorrow.
