I might try and come to this but either weekend is fine by me. Thankfully I am flexible on the timing although I'm not sure about the drive up there in a 40 with no top that anything over 65 she is screaming down the road!!!

That's going to suck and with that 3speed tranny you'll be going 55. Trailer it

In theory a good idea but I don't have a trailer or a car that I would be willing to pull it with.
She will cruise fine at 60 if I want but anything above that is a bit much.
I'm actually planning on taking her up to Greenville for the weekend of the 12th to go to Trollhole's swap and I figure it is going to be about a 4.5 hour drive on the back roads. My wife is even going to ride with me when I told her she would drive separate since I won't have a top and it will be colder out and she hates the cold!
Who knows though I may be really lucky and have a full soft top by then. I should have the bows next week and maybe even a top as well that I am planning to use as a template to hopefully make a new one from if possible.
If I get a top then I am all set. I have been reading some of the threads about a 4 speed tranny but they are confusing me more than anything and look forward to talking to someone who can give me more of the lowdown on it because I think that would be a huge improvement.

Where in the world did you find the bows?

This is where it is going to get interesting. I have actually managed to purchase two sets and we will see how it all works out. The first set is a full OEM set off with the OEM soft doors and a set of OEM half doors.
The second set is coming from ICON. They make a reproduction set that is cheaper than the ones out on ebay for $650 and they have a few of them left which is cool and we will see what they look like and how they work. Frankly I am not concerned about OEM so much so if the ICON ones are nice I'll keep them and see what I can get for the factory ones which I know are a gold mine but I plan to keep the doors. I think I have spent more money in the past 4 days on parts and crap than I care to think about!

That's just aggravating. I spend months and months looking for bows with ZERO luck. You come along with your fancy long black hair, olive complexion and Jesus beard and Blam!!!, bows readily available. They must think you are a terrorist and are scared of you.

Complexion, check.
Jesus beard, check
Long hair, it's been awhile since I've seen you as that is gone! Got tired of not being able to put the windows down in the car and I couldn't imagine the pain in the ass it would be in the 40!
Once I have them all in my hands I will explain the process I went through. It wasn't as easy as you think but I was on vacation and I had time on my hands!
Hopefully I can have everything in my hands before next weekend so I can show some of it off!

I'm just jealous. Your tall and thin and I 'm short and fat.
Anyway, you should start a build thread.

Don't make me slap you when I see you..... that and the strongest muscle in my body is the one that holds my gut in!
I shoudl start a build thread but that would mean I have to document what I am doing and I always forget to do that until it is too late. At least I can do a before and after shots right?

I do have some cool new things to show off.

oh and sorry for the thread hijack... its BBQ Boy's fault!

if you actually exist, show up for a meet, and actually wheel your rig instead of just being one of the multitudes of IMAGINARY FRIENDS that Bessinger has....then all will be forgotten. :)

No one likes me so I have to develop figures of my imagination.
Brock, it's good you came back up for air.

I might just have to venture over and camp with you guys'. I will keep checking to see when the date shakes out to be. This far out either weekend works for me.

Chris, wondering why all the talk about the 3 speed and hwy speeds? The difference in the 3 and 4 speed isn't going to do anything for cruising speed an RPM's as they both have a 1:1 ratio in the final gear. However, a 4 speed is fully synchroed so the shifts are smooth, and the gears are spread out over 4 instead of 3 so you don't have to rev it so high before shifting.

The only way to cruise better at hwy is to change gears or add larger tires, or get an overdrive.

Jeremy

Jeremy,
Thanks for the info because frankly I don't know what the hell I'm talking about half the time. I have taken the crazy crash course in 40's over the past 2 or so months and am trying to figure things out. I have read a bunch of stuff but nothing that definitively puts it all together. The reality is I would like to be able to cruise at highways speeds more comfortably without the engine screaming at me. I already have bigger tires so if it is gearing that I need to do it then someone please chime in and tell me what my options are because I don't have a damn clue!

Thanks for the heads up and info before I went and did something stupid and spent a bunch of money on something that wasnn't going to give me what I wanted!

What size tires you running and do you know your RPM's? These tractor motors all sound loud at hwy speed, not sure yours is out of the norm. Would need some specs to help you further. Also need to know if it the stock gears, (4.10) or did someone change them out for later cruiser 3.73's?

Jeremy

tires are 31x10.5 and I'm going to assume that the gears are stock from what I know but can't be sure of course.

He is running 31x10.5x15 MTRs from Treadwright. Gearing is stock at 4:11. He is right. The thing is screaming above 55 :)

I'm actually moving just down the road from you again CustomAV. Would love to see how the FJ40 is comming along.

Well there you have it the info from the source considering I bought it from him and the pic I am using in my avatar is one of his photos because I'm too lazy to take a new one!
Where are you moving?
She is coming along nicely with quite a number of cosmetic changes as well as some others that are in the works.

Hopefully I can see you at Uwharrie. I'm paying my dues again to ONSC and am considering one of the SC clubs as the GA members all seem to be further away. Hopefully there are a few of you close to the border and I can make it up that way at least a few times this year.

Looking forward to see what you have done.

I will be moving to Savannah GA next week.

Thank you,

I know Charleston is just up the road and I should have no problem trying to get the wife to go there. Only thing that stinks is the baby can't ride on the trails for another year or so and he HATES car trips. None the less I'll be up there at least once or twice as long as the army doesnt' work me to hard. I have over 100 days of leave stored up but they nevery let me take it....hence why I have so much.
