I just visited San Jose Auto Steam Cleaning to have 16 years of caked on oil and grime completely removed from the underside of my 80. It looks show room clean... just off the assembly line clean. It's a must if you're 80 has been leaking oil (pretty much all of them are). If you're in the area, I highly recommend checking them out http://www.sanjoseautosteamcleaning.com/. Extremely impressed with the service and nice people too.

What was their rate on an 80?

They charged me $135 for going from the transfer case to the front bumper. Well worth it IMO.

I'll try to get pics this afternoon.

That's the place right by the shark tank, right? I've used them before on my 68 Cutlass and VW Corrado. I can second that recommendation, they do a great job. I think I paid $100, but that was a few years ago now.

Yeah. Same place. So much nicer to work on the underside and track down leaks.

so, to answer my own question I found these guys, $139 for a complete steam cleaning bottom and engine bay, seems reasonable, there was one other place and they wanted 200, which seems excessive. I will probably head to these guys when I finish up my leaky front end and before I do the engine work I need to do:

Guppie, If it was me, I'd do it before you did your engine work so that you have a cleaner environment to work it. It may also allow you to accurately diagnose any leaks you may have.

I had a diesel truck wash "steam" clean under my hood last weekend. They did it for $5! Although it was more of a hot water power wash (they said steam, but I wasn't convinced), it did a pretty good job and the price was right. They wouldn't touch the underside because the truck was too low for them, but it got everything clean from the head and above in the engine bay.

For those of you that don't have a steam clean close, try checking out a big rig wash service. This one is called Blue Beacon in San Antonio, but they have several locations in other states. Cheap and pretty good job.

^DAYUM. Looks awesome.

I have always been weary of pressure washing under the hood. Did they take any precautions or just go to town like it was a diesel big rig?

How does the front of your engine look? Just as clean as everything else? I really need to get in there and have it sprayed out like that.

They kind of went to town on it, but I was there to direct them away from anything too delicate (ie Hoses, plug wires, seals, etc). They also stood far enough away that the "stream" was pretty diffused and less acute when it hit the surfaces. I havn't noticed any negatives from it at this point, but I'll keep watching for a little while.

The front of the motor looks great, but it wasn't really bad to start with. The passenger side, below the head is still very funky. I bought the truck with a PS fluid leak and it had been leaking for a while, so everything on the lower right side of the motor is caked in goo that got blown back by the fan. I actually found an auto detail place here in San Antonio that will put it on a rack and do the underside for $65 with a real steam machine. I'm gonna take it over there on Friday and see if they can work some magic. Its so hard to really work on the underside because it slick and filthy, so I'm hoping to at least clean it up a bit so I can get a little better look at that area of the motor and hopefully fix anything that is leaking or close to failing. Right now I'm not losing any noticeable amount of oil or tranny fluid, but I think there are definitely a couple of small leaks that I can't source due to the gunk!! I'll post pics once I get it cleaned!

Overall, I would recommend the big-rig place, but just make sure you stand there and direct them where you want the washing done and where to avoid.
