Good day everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has experienced a severe almost uncontrollable wobble coming from the rear suspension. Fortunately for my family it occurred off the expressway and about two miles from the house. It seems to occur now at speeds in excess of 20 miles an hour. I had a hard time re-establishing control the first time it happened. I have a 98 LX 470.

I was just about to create a thread on a random wobble that happened to me 2 times over the past 2 weeks. But this wobble felt like it was coming from the front. Happened between 55 and 60 miles per hour. Had to pull over...go slow on the curb and have it "work itself out" for a while before I could get back on the highway. Couple things to note:

- Got a flat tire about 1/5 months ago. Now have the spare on it (who knows how long it was under the rig). I am running stock Michelins. I inspected the tire after the wobble incidents and don't see any tumor or abnormalities
- I do think my brakes are wearing down...(or this wobble is making me hyper sensitive). Noticing that braking is becoming less smooth. Some initial whining when starting out from Park and removing the hand brake (hand brake is about useless now), but not enough whining to make me think it is making the "warning noise" when pads get low.

Not sure what the issue is, but am looking to move up to 285 Nittos and do the space/T-bar lift, but now am concerned that I will exacerbate the wobble. Wanting to know if there is something else I need to have serviced while I am getting the Nittos and T-bar work done.

Bad CVs?

Help please!

thanks!
99 LC, 106K (owned since 86K), Stock, no Running Boards (for now)

Nature Calls,

Check to make sure the spare is still balanced.

Thanks....I thought about that, but I thought that the wobble would immediately cease when I slowed down, it didn't. I had to "work it out"....slow down...stop...start again..wobble....stop hard...start again wobble...keep going a little...then OK.

Sorry for the thread hi-jack.

Don't forget about the back-end wobble question! :)

The obvious: Check to be sure you're not about to lose a wheel.

The not-so-obvious: Remove and inspect the rear upper control arm bushings...ditto for the lowers (and pan-hard whilst you're there ;)).

Sound advice.

If you are running a spare tire that is original with the truck, it is over 13 years old! That is not a good idea as tires dry rot. It could also be part of your issue.

I checked the tires and they are secure. It is now racked and it appears the sway and track bar mounts are broken due to corrosion. The mechanic said worse case scenario the differential would have to be replaced. : ( Unless he can find mounts that he could fabricate.

What? The diff needs to be replaced? I hope you made a typo.

pkelly72,

You're correct. The rear axle needs replacing if I can't find mounts to weld. I'm checking with CDAN at American Toyota.

I had "severe" wobble for about 3 weeks a couple of years ago.....I always felt like it came from the front so I only checked out that area. Turned out I was missing a bolt on the axle side of drivers side rear lower control arm. Only reason the arm did not fall out is because the mount was so bent up that it could completely fall.

Wow/scary on the missing bolt on the control arm. A Control arm issue makes sense given what I experienced with the "Severe Wobble" and then having to 'work it out' (which is the best way I can describe it)

Collector_edi,
Sorry to hear about your corrosion issue. That sucks.

do you still have ahc on your vehicle? sanity check that your vehicles height (and neutral pressure) is to spec. regarding height - rear left and rear right are same height, front left and front roght same height?

I do have AHC and there isn't anything abnormal regarding height.

I have to replace the housing on the axle or get a used one. I'm told it would be easier to just replace the rear axle.

I did purchase a axle housing tube from Lexus. The few that where in the scrap yards were in awful shape. It took weeks to conclude that going new would bring piece of mind. Looks pretty good and I finally got her back a couple of days ago.
