Well I just bought my 03 Sequoia a couple months back. Bought an 05 Tubdra dbl cab new and sold it about a year ago or so.
Both of these had a lower ball joint recall I think. Free of charge Toyota will check your vin and replace them if it applies to your vehicle. They can check service records to see if it was done at any dealer.
When shopping for Sequoia's I ran into common problems to look for...
- rear hatch release can fail.more prevalent with vehicles operated on dirt roads and I would imagine a salty area would be a higher risk of failure as well.
- 4.7's I guess are prone for exhaust manifolds cracking. Make sure you get to start anything you are looking at cold and as you drive you'll hear a tick tick or leak if it is.
- Limiteds same problems as most leather interios..drivers seat prone to cracking after a while.
- Plastic headlight lens prone to yellowing and becoming less translucent
- my rear brake light assembly above the rear hatch has moisture in it..need to address still
- 4.7 litre is an interference engine with a timing belt. A good bartering detail or detail to make sure it has been done.
-my 03 has a transmission dipstick to check level of fluid and condition..my 05 has no tranny dipstick..not sure how you shop a used model of this year... almost need to remove plug and inspect fluid.
- I looked at an 01 Sequoia that had 195,000 miles on it and it had rust issues on the hood, roof by the moonroof, 1 had rust in rear wheel well drivers side, drivers door handle loose, trim on doors falling off,
- I think there was a recall on 02 's or so about poor takeoff under poor traction conditions where the ATRAC would leave you hardly moving along with traffic bearing down on you..likely a small number of folks had this concern but it would only take once to be a big concern.
One thing I noticed with my 03 Sequoia is I was surpised with the fuel mileage as compared to my 05 Tundra. 3 mpg better already!
- 01 -04 4.7's had less HP and 4 speed autos where 05+ got a VVT engine and a 5speed auto.
I was impressed with the durability potential of these units now..check out Pilots build thread..
