Ok guys, next July my son in law retires from the Navy after 22 years. He and I are currently in the planning stages of trip that would take in the Kokopeli Trail then down the Lockhart Basin Rd to Hamburger Rock, and time permitting, beyond. There is one campsite on the Lockhart Basin road that we would want to spend two nights at. It’s that gorgeous. The trip is either going to be late Sept or Oct as he must do a final exit interview sometime in Oct.. right now we are kicking the idea around, but we also are putting out an invite for anyone to join us. As some of you know, my wife & I venture west a couple times a year. It is high time to begin inviting other like minded folks to join us. I know I’d have a blast hangin with others. PM me about it and let’s plan.. oh, here is that campsite I mentioned.

Way to plan ahead Don, looks like good fun!

Is there a Wal-mart nearby to that campsite? Looks a bit dicey to me :)

No Walmart; years ago someone asked me about the nearest casino, they were serious; duh, I was dumbfounded by the question. Also, I should mention that my wife will not be on this trip, so we can all sit around and make fart jokes without fear of reprisal. LOL

Update. So far we have 3 vehicles in our group. Leave date will be the weekend of Sept 16th. We are tossing the idea around of beginning in Montrose Colorado and head to Moab on the Rim Rocker, then down to Indian Creek and head north up through Bears Ears, camp at least 2 nights at the pinnacle, continue north into Moab, then if time allows run the Kokopelli over to Grand Junction. Single Malts, Great Bourbons, & Great Ryes will be the order of the evening at camp. Here is another teaser.

How many days are you planning to do this trip Don? Are you guys driving out as well? Thanks

Two weeks and yes. I'm thinking 6 days of driving out and back, 7-8 days of leisurely trail riding, camping, day hiking, etc. The Rim Rocker can be covered in two days, but thats really moving along a bit too fast. Im thinking 2 - 3 nights on the RR. Re-supply and gas up in Moab, head down to Indian River, camp, then headed north up to what I call, the pinnacle camp site, which is about 6-7 hours north on Lockhart Basin Rd. It is a very technical road, but passable with a stock 4runner. Many of us want to camp there for at least 2 nights. From there it will be optional. There is a gauntlet that took us 5 hours to get two lightly modified vehicles through if we continue north. My 80 walked right up after the third attempt. I got out and looked at it and decided the front lockers engaged would keep me high up on the right side. We can all easily hike to it and decide then to continue north up through Hurrah Pass or head back south the way we came in. Regardless, 14 days total.

Sounds awesome Don, thanks. I may be able to pull it off. It would mean sacrificing the September Hurricane season but this is a bucket list trip for sure.

I am off from 9/17-9/27. If I trade the next tour I can get off untill 10/5.
