The Yukon eh !!! Where in the Yukon ? I driven by Haines Junction on my way to Prudhoe Bay.
Really would love to drive up the Klondike/Dempster Hwys to Inuvik

We are planning to head south sometime in June & July...but it all depends on work too...
I am very curious as to how far south we make it..

Have fun up north it is beautiful country !!

Planning to do the Dempster for sure, then back through the eastern side of Yukon. Basically as much backcountry as is passable. Will be a break in for new 12HT, and interior mods for long term living.

Keep posting your plans for your trip through Mexico. I am also investing in a fridge freezer for this trip. It is the only thing I see as being mandatory for a trip through southern climates in summer. I would think you would need a minimum of 4 weeks for your trip, am I far off??

Nice..... intinerary you got there...
I'll def post once we head south.
We got a total of 8 weeks but will see how far we get in the first 4 weeks...
I think 5 weeks to Tikal would be cutting it close (lots of driving).
Specially when there are so many places and things to see and do down there....

We bought a fridge/freezer last year and its F$%^&G AWESOME.. !!!

Admitted..... Mexico has its reputation and it is not to be taken lightly.....
You got a much better case if you compare it to Chicagoland where the Murder toll has surpassed that of Afghanistan death toll.....

Thanks for the heads up tho' ....

I guess you have not been reading the new lately about Mexico. There is a civil war going on and there is no rule of law. I work in Afghanistan and it is safer here than in Mexico.

Thanks, Mike! Kind of eye opening, if you've considered Mexico for an overland trip, as I have. After reading the Spring break in Mexico 2013 report from your link, and epecially this tip which is at the end of the article:

"- Do not bring anything with you that you are not willing to have taken from you."

Food for thought.:hhmm:

Last time I went through Mexico was about 12 years ago. My dad took the toll roads where ever he could. Wasn't too bad then but not that great now. I remember my cousins truck had a breakdown and we had to wait a day to get the part at a gas station. We entered through Nogales in AZ and went down to Guadalajara.
Tips.

Take toll roads (Our preference) but if you're driving at night I would definitely take the tolls

Take very little cash. Maybe 500 pesos and hide some of it on you. In a shoe or tailor an inside pocket.

Try to caravan with someone, even a big rig and stick to them.

You also want to get the appropriate passes before hand to make it getting in and out faster at the consulate. (My dad use to get permits for the cars)

Good luck and try to document as much as you can for ua

Just curious, and please consider that I've not traveled South of the border, yet. What's the big deal about not traveling at night? The bad guys get bolder, they got vampire blood or what  ? I've heard you can't rely on the police, but if you're trying to make up for lost time for some reason, stretching your driving hours into the night sometimes helps, but it sounds like maybe something to avoid down there.

Driving at night along major highways in metropolitan Mexico is a lot like driving here; statistically more dangerous, but totally doable. I don't like driving in rural Mexico at night. I've done it plenty of times, and every time I do, I tell myself it will be the last time. I could tell you some horror stories, but instead, take the facts--there is more livestock wandering the roads, the roads themselves are unpredictable and hap-hazardly planned, they are not well lit, and freight trucks often drive very fast on very tight sections. If you're driving from Cancun to Tulum, no problem, the road is better than 99% of the roads here in California. But I wouldn't drive to Gonzaga or Mulege at night, if I could avoid it.

The road from Mexicali to San Felipe is better than 90% of the roads in California, its a great area and fun trip. South of SF the road is not at nice but still easy to travel.

When you guys are driving with cruisers, do you have problems with theft? Do you have to keep windows up? I know the obvious, don't leave stuff out in the open. Do vehicles left on a beach while you go for a walk get targeted, or is this a function of location? I've always found locals will tell you whether you need to be extra careful or not. Is this information generally reliable?

I just got back from Baja last week. Drove from LA all the way down to Cabo San Lucas.

No issues at all. I do as I normally do. I leave the camping gear out and if I go for a walk I have the valuable stuff locked in the vehicle or carried on myself.

I can't believe that I've ran into people from British Columbia, Germany, and Colorado that I met from my last trip driving through Baja. Even waitresses recognized me at some of the restaurants.
