Best to get clean new pieces trying to learn on old scrap will only discourage you .. Swing by I have some clean pieces I can give you

Western Steel has a back lot full off off-cuts, CNC remnant or mistakes, and other steel scrap. Pick what you want - I think it was $0.50/lb but it's been awhile

I got a handful from Metal Supermarket in COS. I'll check this place out, too.

I haven't made it down to Precision, yet, but I will.

I didn't know we had one of those here. Just checked their prices on some Al tube I ordered for the robotics team... more expensive then shipped from online metals

I’m learning welding, too. Amazing how much people on Craigslist etc think their rusty scrap out in the middle of nowhere is worth.

Hadn't thought to look on CL, but apparently it's not worth the effort.

Amazon has some very cheap welding "coupon" kits that make dice and other decorative items. I'll probably buy some of those after my initial learning.
