So a few weeks ago I added a tranny cooler, and since it was overdue for a fluid change I went ahead and drained it completely. This was just a drain and fill, not a complete flush, so the torque converter obviously didn't get drained out. The fluid that came out was still bright red, clean and didn't smell burned at all (impressive considering it'd been I think close to ten years since I changed it last). I planned ahead and had ordered three gallons of Shaeffer's All-Trans from Amazon after reading about how great it is. I have to say, after driving with it the last 400 miles I'm very impressed. My transmission shifts smooth as silk, when cruising on the highway it feels like it's not working nearly as hard to maintain speed, and most notable was that in the last two full tanks of fuel burned commuting to and from work, I got 14 MPG, up from an average of 11-11.5 MPG. I can't speak to whether the Schaeffer's runs cooler than the Mobil 1 I was using before, since it was drained to add a tranny cooler, but performance wise I'm very surprised. This was the only thing changed that could affect driveability and economy. The rest of the work I did at the same time was radiator replacement, headlights and horns. I still have a gallon left after filling, so I'll be ordering another gallon to do another drain and fill in the next month or two to completely flush out the old ATF. I highly recommend spending the money to use this stuff next time any of you drain your A440F. I'm in no way associated with Schaeffer's. Just a very happy customer.

Can't wait now to get a Nomad valve body in and have it run even better with that installed. It's on the short list of stuff to save for now, since my tranny is showing no signs of age, even with almost 300K miles.

Sorry if i missed it, but has your transmission overheated with cooler installed? Are you running stock size tires?

31" tires, and in 80 degree weather in stop and go traffic the hottest my transmission has gotten is 210. My gauge tops out at 260 and the A.T. Oil Temp light (which mine is disabled due to installing the gauge sensor) comes on when it hits 300. I have yet to take it on the long grueling hills around central WA yet, and that'll be the real test of the cooler. There are a couple where my gauge would hit 260, but I don't think the tranny had hit 300. Very curious to see how well the cooler works when I next hit those hills.

Not saying it couldn’t be, but didn’t you post another thread this week where you went to change your t-case oil and when you pulled the drain plug it was near empty... I’d guess actually having oil in the transfer case would improve MPG’s considerably...

I did. This was after the first tank I had gone through which I had also gotten 14 MPG. While obviously getting the proper amount of clean oil in the tcase was a very good thing, it didn't seem to affect my economy between the first tank and second tank. With the first tank full being what it was, I wondered if it may have just been a lucky fluke, but it seems to be continuing, so I'll keep monitoring it and see if it changes much. I'm due for an ignition tune up (cap, rotor, plugs) too, so I'm curious to see if that'll affect my economy at all. It's been about 15 years since cap & rotor, and maybe 12 since putting in new plugs.

Right? IIRC that's higher than the EPA rated economy for a brand new FJ62.
