Ok, pick your jaw up off the floor. I did however pick up a couple of Scepter 5 gal. cans for $17.99 ea. at my local Pepe' Boys auto parts. They are twice as thick as the regular plastic gas cans I've bought before. While these are NOT the military issue, they are very strong and they are are genuine "Scepter".

Do they also come in other colors? Would be cool to get some for both gas AND water. This is a great solution. Will be making a visit to Pep Boys this weekend!

They did have one in light blue for water. EDIT Don't know what I did but I quoted me instead of StevenS sorry

Are they anywhere near the durability of military grade Scepter cans?
They are not as "thick" in plastic wall thickness as the military units, but much thicker than any other plastic ones I've seen at other stores. One thing I did notice, they are larger at the base than standard steel cans: but I have a custom 2 can mount I built that fits these or the steel cans. These really seem to be a very good value and high quality.

THX FOR THE INFO. How about a photo of your custom mount please.

Here's my can carrier. I mount this to my roof rack and just bungee the cans down.

Can you do the community a huge favor?

Take one of your new cans, fill it with water, and hang it upside down (in your garage or something) and leave it there overnight, or even for a couple days?

If these don't leak, I'll make the 2hr drive to a Pep Boys to pick some up!

Thanks!

Tim, I'll do you one better. I'm leaving on a camping trip tomorrow. I have 2 filled with 5 gals. of gas. I live at 300' above sea level and by this time tomorrow, I should be at 8000 ASL. I'll give you the results when I get home. Fri.

Nice! Keep us posted!

I just bought one at Pep Boys, the last one on the shelves, out the
door for <$20.00

Right beside it were Scepter replacement CARB spouts for $5.00.

Today I filled it up with water and dropped it onto its side (the big side) onto the cement driveway from 7 ft. (water is heavier than gas...right??). No problems.

It's now sitting upsidedown in the garage. For $20 I may go back to the garage and go ape s*** on it just to see how it much it can take. Then again...it was the last one there so maybe not.

Well, just got back from my camping trip. I layed one of the cans down on it's side when I got to our site. It was swelled up like a dead dingo. I left it there until this morning....not a drop was leaked! Only critcism is like I stated earlier, they are wider at the bottom than standard cans , so they won't fit the old school metal can mount. A coustom can mount is cheap and easy to make. See my earlier post. Oh, here's a pic.

Skidplate, did you try to remove the cap while the can was under pressure?? If so, was it pretty difficult?

dealmaker, the cap was very easy to remove. Look at the above pic, the cap has a ratchet type dealy, you push down on the tab and unscrew the cap. No problem.. and when I removed the cap it belched like it was friday night pizza and beer night. Tomorrow when I clean up my gear I'll post a pic of the spout and seal in more detail.

Here's a pic of the CARB spout and a side by side of standard size can and the new one.
