So the front brakes on my 2000 LC engaged a couple of times while driving on the highway (without me pressing the brake pedal). The alarm goes off but only about a half second before it happens. The first time it happened it was about 5 minutes after going through the car wash which sprays under the car, other two times were on dry road. I took it to my mechanic and he said he checked everything and that it was fine but I had low tire pressure. It didn't happen again for two months then recently I was in the mountains and it happened again. I immediately checked tire pressure and the front tires (michelin) were a bit low but not really noticeable just by looking. The check engine light and door ajar light were both on after that incident, filled the tires and the next day the check lights went off and hasn't happened since. I'm taking it in again to get checked but any advice on this? I guess it might be time for new tires but they aren't bald and my tech rotates at every oil change. Thanks for any help!

I don't understand why low tyre pressure should affect this.
If this was the case, then I should always have issues when offroading when the tyres are at 20psi or lower.
Hopefully you will find the cause.

this has absolutely nothing to do with tires. Something tells me you have a malfunctioning ABS valve.

Thanks for the replies, I didn't think the tire pressure should cause that either but he seemed to think so. I'll definitely have the ABS valve checked, don't like feeling like the brakes could lock up at any moment. Will post results..

I'm not sure there is a way to have it "checked". Next time it happens and the light comes on haul to an auto parts store to get the code read.

Common issue with the hundy. Symptomatic of a worn/bad steering rack.

The steering rack wears over time and becomes sloppy enough that steering angle sensor and yaw sensor don't agree - indicating to the ECU that the car is experiencing some sort of slip angle (lose of directional traction). Enough that the stability control believes it needs to intervene by braking.

I am sure my steering rack is worn, but the brake issue.......I am guessing this only applies to 2000 and newer 100s with traction control?

Very interesting I will look into the steering rack and ABS valve. This LC only has 165k but I've been "investing" a decent amount into things like this since I got it. I'm used to maintaining boats (break. out. another. thousand) so I'm used to maintenance but this is my first LC so it's all new. Appreciate the help!

Hmmm, might it be a fault in the ABS "panel"? Don't know the official name, but it's next to the master cylinder. If that goes you have to replace the entire MC which is pricey, as I've noted in other posts. When it goes all of the dash panel lights go on. Luckily, I was at a stop sign when it happened to me, but I think if you're driving, the car stops once, then zero brakes.

Good point that it may only apply to limited years. I believe the slopping steering rack interacts badly with stability control in those models years that have that.
