What would the departure time be from Arlington? Or when would we be meeting, where, and how long on the trail?
-b

i left fairfax/arlington early last time - met up with tracy, ryan, and bart at the ihop in gainsville @ 29 & 66, from there we caravanned to the gas station east of 81 in Edinburg (??) for a 9:30am meetup at the gas station with breakfast on the way, we left arlington area at 7am i think.

roll call - how many are 'in' for 4/7? Anyone done the tasker's gap trail more than once (i've only run it once and b/c i had a CB i was in the rear so i didn't exactly pick the route :) )

some expo portal va members are looking to get out, thinking of cross posting this if our group isn't so big - be nice to meet some new folks, too.

I'm still in for 4/7. Just need to be back in the 22315 by 430pm at the latest. If that doesn't seem possible then I may just go to one of the meeting stops that day and just say hello. :/

cool - if we hit the trail @ 10am, after meeting up at 9am at the gas station, 9:30am depart from there its doable. last time we did the firetower climb after the actual wheeling and arrived at a farm west of edinburg by 4pm. so if you skip the firetower it would work out.

agenda, [shamelessly stolen from last may's ride]:

Proposed Agenda--Saturday April 7th

0800-0845 Meet somewhere for breakfast (from the East, i'll be stopping @ IHOP in Gainsville, just off 66 in the mall to the east of 29)
0930 meet at Edinburg Shell Station, just off the east side of exit #279 on I-81 to buy day-pass ($5/vehicle)
1000-1400 Trail Ride; the trail head is east of town across the river on SR 675. The trail is identified on Google Maps as "Powell Mountain Trail". It goes North/Northeast for about 15 miles. The north side ends near Woodstock Tower, with great views over the "Seven Bends" of the Shenandoah River. We'll have to make time to hike the 1/4 mile to the actual tower and take in the vistas over the treetops!
1400-1500 Firetower climb

i've reached out to sas and pegasus on more info on checking conditions and such

Ranger Info & Trail Map

Based on the description of what you are discussing I think you mean Peter's Mill Run that starts on State Rt 675 and terminates at State Rt 758 near the tower. The ranger station - Lee Ranger District phone number is (540) 984-4101. Recommend always calling a few days before wheeling to confirm that Peter's Mill Run is open (note that they have now re-opened Taskers Gap after being closed for 6 months due to storm damage). Wheeled Peter's Mill Run back in November with my 10 year old son. We stopped mid way at a clearing which had a stand of old oak trees at the far side - we did a little squiel hunting - we saw one within the first 10 minutes but we came home empty handed. Peter's Mill Run is a great trial to observe wildlife - over the course of four runs last year I saw many deer, turkey, grouse and one time a black bear. Trail was in good shape. Rangers had cleared back branches and trees 10 feet on both sides of trail during summer of 2011. They also used a bulldozer to take out a bunch of the larger rocks and regraded drainage so now there are no deep pools or mud holes to get stuck in (see attached photo of my son getting us stuck in Spring of 2011 - thank God for the winch). I would consider the trail a "Green" Trail now and all stock vehicles should have no problem.

It is temping to join in on the fun - put me down as a maybe - I wont know until the last minute as family plans on Easter weekend might trump any wheeling ideas I have.

That sounds reassuring. Then I'm definitely in. Do you guys bring your family or kids with you? Im just checking to see if it's worth bringing my wife and 2 year old.

I'll be bringing my 2 sons (5 and 7) my wife is staying behind with our 2 yr old to prep for easter. skrewball brought his 2yo daughter on this trail last time. SAS brings his 3 kids usually, and his name escapes me, but a 60 series with a 3rd row added, usually brings his. so no guarantees they'll be here this trip, but yes, the norm is family friendly.

If you guys don't mind a newbie joining in and not an official club member I'd like to join in. 4/7 works.
