I think maybe just maybe on Saturday I'm going to attempt to rebuild my FJ40 axle. I have all the parts, plus some used longs and locked 3rd to install with it.
Anyone wanna come over and spectate? It'll be fun or funny?

Tech...Do I need to martack the axles with a lockright?

I just did this and forgot how miserable this can be. My aftermarket high steer arms where a b*****tch to get off.

Regarding the tack weld, if you do not have the outer and inner axle connected, nor do not have an ARB, the inner can wander around, so you need to prevent the wandering.

Item to consider...the last three times I have been wheeling, somebody has lost a diff drain plug. I am going to weld my closed and put a bolts at the bottom of my diff. Kind of matters how hard you are going to hammer that green machine :D

The green machine just gets hammered in my driveway!
I might have to find soemone to tack that in town. it'll probably sit in my driveway 1/2 torn apart for a couple of weeks.
Are you going to make it to the hoedown?

Does the plug get torn out, or just knocked loose, then spun out?
If they are just getting spun out, I might add a couple of diif/t-case/trannny plugs to the glovebox stash.
OTOH if the threads are getting destroyed, then I guess carrying a spare plug isn't gonna help. Maybe bring a spare axle housing, used as a rear bumper, w/ the swivel housing as a swing out pivot. :hillbilly:

Hey Marty

I will be around for the first part of the day and can help for a while. As long as you don't mind a beer around 10AM. Any prep work Friday evening....organizing, etc.....

Shoot me a PM with the details.

Pete

They get spun out and then the threads get damaged, even low profile plugs.

If your diffs spend time on rocks, it will be a problem.

I am going to try to make the Hoedown, I need to find time to fix a few things after CMCC.

Karl

Pete...If all goes well, I've got to clean some tile and re caulk in the bathroom on Friday. I'll be outside hopefully on sat am until the wife and kids get home around 2 or 3. Then I have to goto a lazer tag bday party. I know I won't get it done, but I'll at least get started. I'll be in the backyard just peak you head around the fence or call three 7 4 8 6 8 0
You don't have a big socket or a welder do ya?

You mean the 54mm socket

I may have picket one up I will look tonight when I get home from dinner with the inlaws

wait, you're married?
oh yes and the 54 socket

No I am not married...not yet anyway. Her parents are in twon for the next week visiting. So....well I am sure you understand.

I will let you know tonight if I have that or not. I want to say I bought one a harbor freight awhile back...but don't hold me to it.

cool....I just knew you were gone 90% of the time

Yes before this week I was home only 4 weeks in 2009 thus far, with the exception of a few Saturdays and parts of Sunday...I have out of town.....it is getting pretty old.

Anyway if you need anything else let me know.

I got real far! I never even got the wheels off.....My home project tokk a wee bit longer and a couple of kids bdays. I'll try again this week and next weekend.

FWIW I'm headed back to IN the 8th/9th. I could probably lend a hand while house/dog sitting. Or you could just drop it off and collect it when it's done.

Nick

What time should I dorp it off ;)

Marty......are you going to give it another try this weekend?

If so I will be around and can drop by to lend a hand.

Maybe on Saturday but I think we are going to the zoo?

You got any cheap wheels tires over there you wanna get rid of?

Sorry...no cheap wheels...I have my 80 series alloys, but I wouldnt want those to go to the cruiser.....you need some of the really cheap steel aftermarket wheels with some bald tires

There is a nice set of 35x12.50 trxxus M/T radials mounted on Mangels 15x8 white wagon wheels here. They were on my FJ60, but the sagging front suspension was making it difficult to fit them anymore, so... email if you're interested. I can send pics or you can swing by if you're in the central OH area.
