Not sure if this should go here or in Chit Chat....

Who here has had their 100-series timing belt service done in the Sacramento region? Who did you use and what did you pay?

Mine is just past 180k now and it's time to cough up some money for the timing belt service. No time to DIY this one either. Yesterday I called up several dealerships to try and get a ballpark of what I'll be paying - of course all service reps were too busy to take my call and I only heard back from one so far.

I looked up the list of what the majority here agree should be done at the same time and it seems to be considerably longer list than what the dealerships have been telling me is part of the timing belt service for the 2uz.

Basically they're telling me that the T-belt service is only the t-belt plus a "major" service where they're replacing all fluids in drivetrain and cooling system, and basically a thorough inspection of everything - so far 3 places want $850-950 to do this service.

I asked all of the service advisors to quote me for more stuff like the water pump, serp belt, idler pulleys, seals, U/L rad hoses, and heater T's -- Auburn Toyota was the only place to get back to me so far and they want around $1750. Heck, just the heater T's they want almost $300. They were on the lower end for the basic t-belt service, so I'd assume they'll still be the cheaper dealer.

So....I see lots of 100-series in my area - who is servicing your rigs? So far I like Auburn for our regular services, it's where my wife's family buys and services all their Toyotas. Roseville was so-so when I used them in the past. Folsom, considering they have a giant independent facility for only service is freaking slower than molasses and the first time I went there, one of the service estimators was like "Hey nice Highlander, I've never seen one with a lift and mud tires." I responded: "You work at Toyota and don't know their flagship vehicle when you see one?" then simply walked away.

Auburn sounds like it would be the call, since you're familiar with them and have a history. For reference, Walnut Creek Toyota did my T-Belt, WP, serp, idler pulley + seals, and tensioner for about 1400 out the door. Adding the rad hoses and T's would easily get you to $1750 from where I was.

That was about average for dealer pricing around here, but I went with Walnut Creek because the service advisor knew the 100 series well and made some good suggestions without trying to sell me on any fluids or inspections. WC is an upscale suburb that has seen lots of LCs and LXs roll through its dealership. I had a similar experience to you with other, closer dealerships seeming clueless when it came to this vehicle and service. And yeah, they all seem swamped, all the time.

Of course Georg and Mudrak are options but they were a little too far out of the way for me on this.

I'd have to assume, then, that the SF peninsula is way out of the way??

Trying to keep it in the Sacramento area if possible. I know Mudrak is the go-to for anything Cruiser in NorCal, but I hear he's always booked and he's also 1.5hrs away from me. I didn't know about Valley Hybrids, will keep them in mind for the future.

I'll probably end up going to Auburn since nobody else called me back and obviously doesn't want my money. I might skip out on the radiator hoses and heater T's replacement at the dealer. Both are fairly straightforward tasks for me to do and not screw anything up, dealer would only replace with stock plastic units not upgrades, the radiator hoses are special order and it should save me $400.

I'm doing mine next month.....myself.

Try TOS. Its called Toyota's Only. It's on Sunrise Blvd by Home Depot....I think.

Let me know who you use. I've had similar experiences at the Dealer in Folsom with my then new Tundra. Basically parts changers with no clue.

The dealers really do suck.

I've heard of TOS. I'll probably stay with the stealer for the 100-series, but I've been looking for a good Toyota mechanic to take my 75 Hilux to, perhaps I'll call them up and see if they'll even work on my truck -- something that I'm surprised so many shops have refused since it's so old and nobody knows how to tune old carb'd engines anymore :bang: Being so close to Tahoe and the Sierras with all the Toyota wheeling, you'd think this place would be littered with places who know Toyota engines like the back of their hands, but it's not the case.

I did the timing belt work myself. I have had wheel alignments and other work done at both Auburn and Folsom dealers and would lean towards Auburn. However I would go into both and talk with a service rep and see what they would do, how much it would cost, warranty on work, etc. AND if it's someone you want to work with.

I'd like to chime in here. Last year we moved to El Dorado Hills and I've been going to Shannon Family Automotive in Folsom lately as I have a pretty major injury from work which keeps me from doing my own repairs. I know, it doesn't sound like the type of place to take a 100, but they're great. Larry, the owner, talks to you personally and actually listens to what you have to say. They are prompt, reasonable, and very knowledgeable. My water pump was leaking after only 45k, and they found that that the last service center did a poor install, causing internal corrosion and eventual failure. It was less than a grand for the whole 90k service, compared to the $1500 botch job last time. Give them a call.

No affiliation whatsoever.
