@kelly saad dropped off a 13B-T that he inherited for me to go through…. I believe it will eventually end up in his 60 series.

Fun engine. Overly complicated. Oh well.

Some disassembly pics…. So far, so good for an almost 40 year old power plant.

Injectors removed. These will go out for rebuild.

Looks pretty good so far…

Flip her upside down…. Let’s see if we can find where all that metal went….

Very little in the pan….

Pan off…. Nothing in the oil strainer/pickup:

Oil cooler off: As expected. Nasty as fǔck….

All sorts of metal in the oil cooler cover…

I only recently realised when taking the oil cooler off my 15B-T that the oil cooler chamber on the B engines is the lowest part of the cooling system in the engine block (not the drain cock). Mine was filled with rusty gunk (it was a Japanese military engine that I am pretty certain was ssitting for many years drained of coolant). That passage that you see in the forward end of the oil cooler chamber should link up to the separate small port on the block where the water pump mounts - mine was blocked solid with hardened gunk to the point where I had to knock out the 14 mm blind plug from the bore and excavate it with a dental pick.

No pre-chambers to worry about so I'm guessing it dropped a valve at some point in #3 cylinder. Looks maybe like non-original valves, or originals which have been machined so my guess this is not what caused the engine to come in for a rebuild?

Magnetic crud in the coolant system is puzzling, was the water pump impeller disintegrating?

Looks like it was still running an old bitumen head gasket.

What's the tiny metal pipe runnign around the back of the block? Something from the injection pump?

Nice engines though I appreciate the updates on the 14B/15B and would be very worried about part avaiability on a 13B-T. Almost everything 13B-T-specific I have checked is NLA.

Yeah, I don't think this engine has been opened up ever. It had well over 500K is my understanding. @ofer bruhis owned this engine previously. I believe Georg installed it maybe 20 years ago or so? Maybe more? Lots of unknowns (as is usually the case with non-US diesels).

Engine came in because I believe it was smoking a lot.

Anyway, easy peasy at this point for a quick overhaul. Just need to find a machine shop for the bottom end and I'm going to start working on parts procurement. Cylinder head goes to machine shop local to me in Tucson. They only do heads but do them really well.

Looks like I was wrong and it ate some piston ring. Interesting valve face wear.

Can we see the cam bearings? They seem like a weak point on these engines and I've seen a few examples where they start to break down and delaminate with age. Also, these old red block B engines have plain cam followers, so the cam lobes may be quite worn.

Really looking forward to following this rebuild! Thanks for sharing.

I'll get some pics next week when I am back in the shop. Time to go ride my bike!

Onur, you are doing your magic. Kudos mate!

By the way I got this engine with over 250k miles and changed oil every 2500 miles fanatically. It is a workhorse.

Thanks Ofer! Not really magic. Just disassembly and assembly and following directions. 😂😂

And hoping a good machine shop is picked for the bottom end!

FYI: The camshaft 56mm expansion plug (soft plug) has been discontinued by Toyota and are VERY HARD TO FIND. Plus ACL Bearings also discontinued the 13B-T piston wrist pin bushings. Just talked to Dan last week at 4 Wheel Auto in Edmonton, Canada he can get the expansion plug out of Australia and he also carries the wrist pin bushings from Japan.

Not an issue here.
