I went by the repair shop to day to check their progress on patching up some rust. I asked them what their plan was for treating the inside of the frame where there is access to it, received blank stares and quickly realized I need another solution. I can look through various holes of rust origin and others that Toyota left in the frame and I can see and feel flaking rusty sections, surface rust, dirt, sand, etc. The tech at our disposal here is limited to spraying chemicals, sanding and welding. The chemicals available are basically heavy duty rust-resistant paints. Here is what I am thinking I should do. Based on the assumption that the frame is a hollow channel from front to back, it seems that flushing it with high-powered fresh water to remove as much dirt and debris is a crucial first step. Is this recommended and practical? Then it should be left to dry. Then I should have them either: spray as much of a chemical or rust neutralizer or paint as possible into the various nooks and crannies or block as many holes as possible and fill the frame with said chemicals, lifting it front and back as high as possible to get it to flow over as much of the frame as possible. Removing the tub is not an option out here. Based on the fact that there is already some rust inside the frame, what treatment would y'all recommend? No matter what I have to ship it in. I've used Por-15 before in brush on applications. If I go that route should I buy enough degreaser and then etcher to fill or treat the frame with each before coating with Por-15 as recommended? Is there a WaxOyl type treatment that would be more appropriate, even when applied by techs with little experience with such chemicals?

I have a little less than 2 more years out here at which time the cruiser will live in more protected climes.

I really appreciate your assistance. I am also happy to pay for a detailed set of recommendations from people that I know have the expertise but may be too busy to help me with this for free.

Best,
Rich

Google is my friend - found Waxoyl recipe

Looks like t should be easy to make up a batch of a waxoyl-like substance. Would y'all recommend going that route, bringing in the real stuff or going with something like Eastwood's internal frame coating?

I guess the only question besides that that I have is can the frame be easily flushed out to remove debris?

Cheers,
Rich

Rust proofing

In the past I have lifted up one end of the vehicle so water runs out of it, get a high pressure washer and be prepared to get wet and dirty, will take a bit.
The chassis should be clean as .

Once dry we mix up some fish oil and cavity wax and use a body wash gun with this mixture, put a bit of hose on end of gun and literally flush the chassis from front to back, the solution will ooze from the chassis, leave for a day or two to dry.
We also use lanolin and cavity wax.

Had sucess with this way and works well

Interesting question I have just this afternoon spent over 2 hours lying on my back on wet concrete shoving the hose and a 3 mm pin to into the chassis cleaning out the silt/mud and rocks/twig/leaves which have found there way in there during the last two trips. surprising amount like 5+kg of mud a side.

get a hose and then a narrow 2-3 mm pipe and put this in the end to create extra pressure is what I use.

to me filling the chssis would be a no no too many holes

Thanks for the advice

The joys of putting your cruiser to good use!

I've ordered cans of Eastwood inner frame treatment and an undercoating spray gun for a waxoyl like mix. Once they cut the front bumper off, flushing the frame will be an option. Perhaps I should have them drill small holes instead to up the water pressure :).

Rich

my frame was pretty badly packed with years of mud and crap I ended up having to tip it on its side to get all the crap out (I just happened to have the engine out and the body off for repairs), when it was still on its wheels there was no where for the water and mud to drain it kept pooling in the bottom of the rails, I used a combination of leaving the hose running through the rails to soak and soften everything, pressure washing and an assortment of rods to dislodge everything, it took a couple of weekends and a lot of water to get it all cleaned out. I did it about 3 years ago and still haven't got around to putting any rust treatment back inside the frame but will probably spray a load of old oil in there to give it some protection and slow down the rust

Hello,

There is no need to cut it off. Four 12-mm bolts attach the front bumper to two gussets, one for each frame rail, which in turn attach to the frame, using two bolts each.

If the bolts are seized or broken, drill them off. Keep in mind that you can tear down a Land Cruiser using just a 10 mm/12 mm/14 mm wrench set.

If the truck still had the original bumper on it then I might be able to unbolt it. The current one on my truck is hard welded to the frame from the back. Cheers, rich
