Hey guys, newbie here. Just got my '84 FJ60 and low and behold th eframe did not pass MD Insp. The section beneath the doors is rusty, I whacked it with a hammer and hit had a nice bing sound but the mech. I took it too is too picky. So I need to beef it up. I have some welding equipment and I do a fair bit of welding. My question is how shuld I go about beefing this puppy up? The real pain in the ass is that I was planning on stripping this thing donw to teh frame and fixing it and building up with a 6bt over the next year. So what do ya'll think? Anyone done it?
Thanks, bahndo

Try a different inspection station or find out when the guy who failed your rig has a day off or takes a lunch break. Good luck!

Bahndo....just got an 87' FJ60 in MD....frame failed inspections as well as there was a small hole in the rear pass floor...mechanic patched it up for little expense and passed....if the shop inspecting is being real picky just find another...I was able to eliminate a number of items as the first place I went to drilled me...MD inspections are tough...

First post....but been lurking awhile...appreciate all the help you folks offer!

thanks!

what kind of inspections are you talking about that a guy looks at it and has to Pass it??? WTF are we talking about here, what country is this????how do you guys put up with that crap??? gimme some details what are they looking at???

bought the cruiser in PA and had to get an inspection by a MD inspector prior to getting the registration from MD...whole item list needs to pass (a long ass list)...if it fails you have to repair within 30 days or you will be forced to get a new inspection....no tags / registration until it passes...

not much choice on putting up with it...it sucks but I live here and need my beach cruiser....

MD sucks! I am going o pick up the cruiser today and I will talk to the mech. I have had a real tough time with MD insp. for a while now. I am days away from getting my Diesel jetta through, right now they won't pass it because teh odometer is halfway between two numbers. I guess when I had it out to get it working again one of the little wheels moved a touch. What a pain inthe ass. They have also failed me for teh back doors not opening, fixed that but then they faileed it again because it had no handles. ARHHH! I wish I still lived in CO, if it would roll you could tag it. Sorry for the rant, I reply later after talking to the mech. Anyone know a mech in MD that does insp.?

I feel your pain. I've had similar issues with the "safety nazi's". In British Columbia they can pull you over at will and have an "on the spot" inspection. Had one guy who pulled us over in my old '78 Corolla (it was always registered in B.C.). It was going to be my daughters car since she was learning to drive. He was determined that it was NOT going to pass. To his dismay all the lights, horn, steering etc worked great, he proceeded to smashing his screwdriver all over the bottom trying to make a hole in the uni-body to prove it was not road worthy. Finally he was able to find one small hole. Then he tried to prove his point by showing me that the drivers floor was too weak. I think his foot probably still hurts he stomped so hard on the floor but it did not cave in or break!
Unfortunately the screwdriver hole was enough to fail it and being so old it wasn't worth fixing.

Wait till you do the frame off to fix it and find a different inspection station, or just weld a plate/patch over the "weak" areas. Not much to it really, you can cut out the weak stuff and make it flush if you want it to look pretty. Sounds like your problem is the inspector though.

Just the the cruiser back. i looked underneath it and I was suprised by how not bad it looked. I talked to the mech. and he said there was nothing I could do but junk it. No matter how I fixed it he would not pass it. What a d!(k, I think I am going to try some place new. I am actually impressed with how much solid metal is still there. Clearly this guy had no idea of what he is talking about becuase he said I couldn't even weld to it! I think once I get it going I 'll take it back and run him down so he can get a good look underneath it to see that it can be welded and that is is still very structuraly sound! Thanks for all the support so far, I am sure I will have more ??'s in the future. I'll post the pic's once I get the cummins in :flipoff2:

post up his number
