Good afternoon, all

My one FJ80 has spent a bit of time in the North and have quite a bit of rust underneath. Is there a shop near Charlotte that you have used for rust treatment? Or have any of you had luck with a DIY job?

This vehicle has been in the family a while and has sentimental value that will preclude the "throw it away and get another one" approach.

Help please?

Rust treatment spots aren't as popular down south since we deal with salted roads only maybe 1 week out of the year. There might be some places that can do it.

In the mean time I'd recommend getting 2-3 cans of Fluid Film to coat the chassis. That should keep anything from spreading and make it easier to deal with when you find the right shop.

I would reach out to some local sandblasting facilities. See if they can blast and epoxy coat. I’ve seen some well done examples, just can’t remember if they were local operations. Yes it seems like someone had this done in the Raleigh area many years ago

A good shop will know where to blast cautiously and also items that should be masked before we spray.

How bad is it? Can't really sandblast a whole assembled vehicle without damaging all sorts of hoses, lines and wiring.

DIY wise, elbow grease wins out. Wire wheels on grinders, die grinders, ospho, primer and paint will win out. It's a long dirty nasty road, but there is success to be had.

In the mean time, you can spray it down with fluid film or kero/used motor oil mix. Will slow/stop the spread till you dig in.

Agreed the temp stop of fluid film works well. As well as the caution for soft/vulnerable bits.

Have been looking with no luck but there are some good threads on Cautiously targeted undercarriage blasting with success.

Will take the right group but have seen it done well. May be a good time to consider soft parts replacements if they may be due (brake hoses, rubber boots, etc)

Still not the thread I recall but here is one. Called sweep blasting. Light and broad. General cleanup not taking to shiny white metal.

I would do what Johny recommended but instead of primer and paint, I would go with POR15. That stuff is self leveling, looks great and dries super hard.

Are you taking about the frame or the body? The DIY options are a little different for each, since the body has a factory sealer sprayed on it, either over the paint or mixed in with it.

POR15 is a good long term DIY option, but a little pricey for me. I like CRC zinc, but I really like Ospho best. I keep a gallon on hand all the time. Since lectroplating a large scale, like the frame, isn't practical in the driveway, or garage, Ospho's reactive solution seems to provide the best option, and it's permanent, unlike all paint-on options. The degree to which it will convert, and thus stop, rust is related directly to how deep the rust is.

No matter what you choose, you have to see bare metal for any remedial effort to have any chance, that means removing all rust and oil, tar, schmutz, etc. Having said that, nothing will be as good as what's done in a factory, nor will it last as long.

You're welcome to drop by one weekend and we can try my small sand blast gun on a small area and see how it goes. It's really helped me in small hard to reach places on my '94, which sadly has relocated to Dallas.

You're down to one now?
