Having a moment of panic here! Crawling around under the new to me 2018 LX 570 w/ 46K miles and noticed some rust in a few spots. Hoping this is nothing to be concerned with..... but I AM concerned. Looking at these photos, should I be concerned?

How does frame look? Take some pictures of the areas around the AHC globes. Rust on disposable stuff like suspension shouldn’t worry you

Edit - cam bolts like nice and clean

No problems I see. I’d treat the rust and then Fluid Film the undercarriage (or with your choice of any non-hardening goop.

There are many good choices out there. I went for Cosmoline RP-342 "Heavy" Rust Preventative Spray, which is military grade and not to expensive. Comes in yellowish (the one I bought, left pic) or black form (now as well available in black, probably the one to buy). It dries up so not too much dirt sticks to it yet stays flexible to conform to the surface vs any rubber coatings (which are not good for under coating out of sight rust problems). In your case local removal of rust with a brush and some sanding paper or otherwise and rustreformer by rustoleum or equivalent would be one of the steps I take.

See at 8min 45 pressure washing. Price for six cans is not bad. I overall had most confidence in this. Since there is now a black version it seems a leading candidate for a lot of us.

Some of the selling points of this product. Note that I am not a share holder or have any interest in this company, just seems a very good product for frame and underbody application. I have also sprayed it in the bottom of my doors after applying dynamat sound deadining on the exposed bottom edge inner surface.

  • EASY-TO-APPLY: Just spray onto a dry surface, dries in about 25 minutes; You’re Done!
  • TRUSTED SINCE WWII – has been widely used & trusted by the U.S. Armed Forces, government agencies, commercial companies, and DIYers/consumers for generations.

I would also add Woolwax and Corrosion Free to the list.

My thoughts on rust mitigation, just throw wool wax or fluid film on the entire underside, and re-apply in the fall each year. That should keep the rust from further progressing.

If you cover it up with paint first, you can’t see how the rust is progressing underneath said paint, and then you can possibly create a rot point where moisture get traps between the applied paint and the rust spot.

Applying wool wax or fluid film creates a non-toxic barrier that displaces and repels the water so the oxidation process (practically) stops.

RP-342 is a wax which does not come off as easy. The fluid film maybe a good option when applied by a place who does it for you, having to DIY every year seems tedious.
