It's pretty minor but I have a small gap on the left side of my fuel door area and the body of the car. Rust is starting to form in this area because water can get in the crack.

What can I put in as a permanent sealant to keep water from getting into this small gap? I want to slow the growth of this.

Maybe a small piece of weather stripping will work? You can trim it down to fit. I would suggest sanding the rust and priming and painting it before you do anything though. The rust will only get worse if left untreated.

I guess I'm looking for some sort of goop, perhaps one that will harden to a metal like substance to fill the crack. That way water won't be able to get into the rusted crack. The right side has some sort of filler or weld between the body and the fuel door area. You can see it around the bolted tab.

Perhaps, once sanded down a thick layer of paint could do the trick?
