Started a few weeks ago. I started the engine one morning and it sounded like it was going to run out of gas, it does it everytime its cold. Once its warmed up it stops. It does not have an engine light on. I thought it was a misfire but it actually sounds like its about out of gas. Toyota dealer said the fuel pump does not kick on an engine light, they tested it today and said it was ok. They want to check it out some more and try to figure it out this week but dont know what it is at this point. Anyone have this happen or any ideas?

Sounds like the throttle body could be gummed up. My Tacoma had similar symptoms. It would not open up correctly unless I tapped the throttle or drove it for a little bit and it was fine after that. Took it apart, cleaned the gunk out and was good to go for another 100,000. If you do decide to clean the throttle body be sure and read up so you can avoid messing up the MAF.

Good idea, however, I cleaned it a few months ago along with the air flow sensor. That was one thing the mechanic at Toyota thought was the problem. He said once you clean the throttle body the car has to re-learn it and it takes a while. Thats not the issue though because it was several months ago.

@kelly saad any resolution on this? I've had the same issue the same couple of days so cleaned the MAF/throttle body today. I drove a few miles and it still seems to run rough. I know it takes a few starts to reset, but from the threads I've read, it seems everyones results are pretty instantaneous if I'm reading them correctly. Wondering if you found anything out.

Was a coil pack but didn't kick on a light. Toyota was able to locate which one and I replaced it.

Good to know - thanks!
When I cleaned my sensor it had a different idle speed that slowly went back to normal. It never ran rough, at least mine didn't. The main thing that doesn't turn on the engine light is the fuel pump. Im not sure why the coil pack didn't turn the light on but at least they could find it when it was hooked up to a computer at Toyota. I ordered a Toyota coil pack from Camelback Toyota in Phoenix for $77, we get a big discount there FYI.
