Running on 2.5 qts of oil? WTF? (1 Viewer)

I was surprised the first time my 2f was running low. They're robust tractor engines. Use 15w40 rotella now and haven't had a problem losing /burning oil since

I dunno what's going on in your case though. What weight do You run?

I wouldn't be too concerned with the oil being black, as modern oil is supposed to turn black when all the additives are working.

Weird. Maybe you're burning oil.

???

Hey Chris, Bart had a weird situation draing and filling his and broughtit to my attention and i had kind of the same thing. I think they don't drain well, like it wants to keep the old oil in there some where. When you re-filled how much oil could you put in ? I have only changed mine twice but both times i almost over filled with new oil. i can't get the recomended amount before it says full onthe dip stick. does any of that make since

I'm stumped. Yeah, I know it must be going somewhere, I just can't figure out where.

Coolant looks good. If I was burning it, would I have smoke? Last oil change was <3000 miles ago and 11 months. Wouldn't losing 5 qts of oil leave my driveway pretty dirty? I DO get spots, but overnight it's never more than a dime. Maybe over time that adds up...

On the plus side, out of concern that the oil galley plug might be the culprit (even though that area on the block is pretty clean), I've discovered that a PO had it repaired/plugged. So I can cross that project off my list.

Then it sounds like you are burning it up. You should see some visible smoke from your exhaust pipe at idle. I doubt the CAT could mitigate it all. My 2F is a oil burner, but nowhere near that bad. Pull your plugs and see what they look like. Tom in CT was burning oil so bad he would foul his plugs while wheeling at low RPMs. When on the highway it was fine, but wheeling at low RPMs he would have to replace his plugs on the trail they would get so fouled.

My first car was a 70s Malibu that burned a quart of oil with every tank of fuel. I carried a case of oil in the trunk until getting rid of it.

Smoke won't show if you have a cat unless you're REALLY burning oil. A friend's Astro Van (later renamed the Disastro Van) was burning a qt. every 100 miles with no smoke.

Interesting. So CATs REALLY do clean up the exhaust.

We had an astrovan growing up too. The sliding door would quite regularly come right off it's track so we got pretty good at getting it back on. That car had all kind of other problems too. In fact, I believe my parents had become so frustrated with everything not working, constant repairs, safety concerns that they just dropped the car off at the dealer and told them to keep it.

No smoke. I changed my plugs recently and didn't feel like they were overly fouled. That said, one had a chipped insulator and they looked all looked pretty rough. I don't know how long they had been in there though. Definitely a good idea to pull a few now and see what they look like.

Haven't done a compression test either, so Sam if you will bring your gauage on Wednesday, that would be great.

So what causes an engine to burn oil? I almost hate to ask...

Worn or missing valve guide seals, blow by from worn or missing rings.

update

any news on oil, did you do compression test

There is a debate that synthetic oils can clean deposits off of seals and cause them to leak (including valve seals). It may also be possible that motors that burn a little oil will burn a little more synthetic oil.

I am not stating this as a fact because it is often debated one way or the other and I have no scientific proof. However, I tend to believe that it may be true. I know for a fact that I have reduced oil burning and leaking by running Castrol 20w50 in my high mileage cars.

Again, just my opinion.

A compression test is not going to tell you much unless you have low compression. A motor can have decent compression and still burn oil. What you really need to do is a leak down test and run a vacuum test. Read up on both, very good diagnostic tools.

Another point to consider (Occam's razor) is that the simplest solution is likely the correct one. Perhaps too little oil was put in at the last oil change by mistake.

Monitor it for a while and see what happens.

Maybe someone tried to sabotage your ride? How many miles since it was last full? If it were 3000 then I'd say maybe u burned it but if you said 300 id be suspicious.
