Hi guys,

After a brief offroading experience last weekend, it's clear that the running boards are in the way. I'm not quite in the position to get new sliders yet, but soon, and have another little trip planned soon. So first question, am I better off leaving the stock ones on to absorb any possible damage to the actual body ( they're already a little dented ), or should I just remove them ? I'm on beginner trails but I still end up bumping the stock boards a little.

Secondly, I looked underneath and the mounting bolts for the running boards and they look pretty rusted. I've been spraying with PB blaster every day to help. I'm still afraid I'm going to strip a bolt though ? Any advice on avoiding this ? Also, do aftermarket sliders make use of the stock bolts or bolt holes ?

Thanks In Advance
OZ

PS - I have searched and found a lot of good info first before posting,,,

Leaving the sliders on won't always absorb the damage, although in your case with beginner trails it might. If you teeter on a rock in a certain way it can actually push the running boards up into the body causing damage. I would say go ahead and remove them but be cautious and know how much clearance you have.

Ok, thanks for the feedback. I'm still blasting it with PB blaster. I tried a 12 mm socket and it fit on the lower bolt but not on the top bolt, does that sound right ? I want to make sure it soaks before I put any force on it.

Also, do aftermarket sliders make use of the same holes ?

Thanks

True sliders will mount to the frame.
I say lose the running boards unless they're important for getting in/out of the vehicle.

I believe the bolts were 13mm on my 99. My bolts were badly rusted too. I did the same PB blaster routine as you and eventually was able to remove 5 of the 8 on each side, but I couldn't generate enough torque with hand sockets to get the remaining ones off. I ended up taking to a local shop where they were able to easily crank off the remaining ones with air impact tools for $30 labor charge.

Running boards won't hold up to much, but i guess they might keep you from destroying your rocker panel in some situations.

Thanks guys, sounds like the best advice is to take them off.

I started loosening one side today from front to back. I was able to start each bolt till I got to the upper bolt on the rearmost hanger. I just can't seem to get a tool in there. There's something else coming down ( almost looks like the bottom of a shock ) that is giving very little room. Any suggestions ? I tried lifting the car a little but it didn't make a difference. I'm going to try to search through the threads some more to see if anyone else has run into this and/or posted some pics…

Thanks

Try and 1/4 inch breaker bar and 12mm socket. That's what I had to get to get in there. The 3/8th ratchet I was using on all the other bolts was too wide. I just pulled mine this weekend, easy job when you have the right tools (3 trips to home depot later). Took me about 45 minutes of actual work to get them off...pretty simple.
