I've decided to get a 2020 Heritage LC but the only concern is the lack of running boards. My wife wants running boards as she is only 5 foot 3 and we have young kids. I asked the dealer about having factory running boards installed, which is going to come out to almost $2K with labor.

Are there any alternative running boards that dont require drilling on body of truck?

Thanks

Thank you madtiger. What did you decide to go with?

Not yet. I thought about ARB but from pictures, there is a sizable gap between the slider and body, which i am not sure i like (see image). (I understand that the gap may be needed to prevent slider from hitting body....) I am just waiting around to see other options from other slider makers.

If you don't want to go the sliders route...

The running boards have bolts on each side that are accessible without a lift. And the HE version has all the bolts in place. Remove bolts, put running boards up there and reinstall the bolts - done. 15 minutes with a socket set. Maybe 20 if you had to use a wrench instead.

All you need to find is someone to sell you the running boards they took off to install sliders.. I'd sell you mine but I put them back on the 2017 I traded in for a heritage edition.

Exactly what I'm doing with my 2020HE because my wife wants a step. Big shout out to Mud Member "KLF" for passing along his take-off steps. I didn't need sliders or want the additional significant weight.

Shoot BudBuilt an email or call, reference Rob.

I take the factory running boards off constantly to install sliders. I don’t throw them away, and I have zero interest in making money on the takeoffs from a customer’s truck.

Just pay for shipping (which we have some incredible rates) and one of my guy’s time to box them.

I’ve seen at least one set of automatic/ folding steps for the tlc. If you aren’t taking your new HE off-road and money isn’t an object, those would be good for a shorter entry. The step on sliders isn’t all the close to the ground.

I just wanted to give big thanks fo Rob / Taco2Cruiser for hooking me up with OEM running boards for my HE. I needed a quick solution as my daughter and wife had problems getting in. By the way if you don't know Rob, check out his shop at www.budbuilt.com. They are located in west NC and specialize in builds for Toyotas, especially Land Cruisers. Beside builds he does as well fabricates and ship parts (ex different types of sliders). Definitely hit him up before you start your next project.

Tyrant was selling them on Amazon for awhile but it looks like they are out of stock. Might be a COVID supply issue as they are built in China. I can’t remember exactly but they were at least $1,600 shipped from AUS, maybe more.

Tyrant 4x4 has retractable steps. I saw an video installed on Heritage edition and looks very clean. Read it was $1600 shipped to US.

Just sent you an email, as I have just purchased a Silver HE and the wife would love me to add the running boards to help her getting in and out. I asked the dealer about running boards and they didn't seem to think I could add the stock running boards to the HE, but honestly they sell so few LCs here in my small town I am not too surprised. TIA for the information here.

Reviving this thread. Looking for RB/sliders for mt HE today. Found BudBuilt and watched the installation video for their full sliders. Good lord they are built sturdy, and the installation is extremely well designed. They even have little "lollipop" handles on the nuts that go inside the frame so that you can hold them in place while you seat the bolt. I've never seen anything like it.

So, shout out to them for their good looking sliders. Now I'm going to email and see if they are still willing to part with some of their left over OEM side steps.
