My wife and I are curious as to what the policy is. On Friday after a long day on the trail from Loon we checked for a suitable spot from the Springs down to the slabs and beyond.

We found a nice spot by the river and began to set up. We had to take stuff out of the 40 to get to a well deserved beer. We were in the beginnig stages of setup when we were informed by two women that the spot we were occupying was "reserved" for the Unimog Group.

We saw no sign indicating this, there was ample room for my 40 in the area and frankly we were suprised. Next year I want to reserve a spot where the 40's were with all the rooftop dog houses. How do I do so?

On a side note the Unimog people let their three or four dogs run wild and shook water all over my wife and I and our food. This would not be a capital crime had not one of the dogs eaten all the apatisers my wife had laid out on the tailgate of my 40. We should not be required to guard our food from someones stupid dog. (And thoughtless owner)

What is the policy on dogs running wild? There were several other 'dog confrontations that I witnessed and I am sure there must have been more I did not witness. If I bring my cat what assurances do I have he won't be chased and harrased?

The two women insisted the spot was reserved for them and their special group. My wife was in near tears because she was tired, hungry and confused because I could not relate to her the "Rubithon Campground Reservation Policy." Perhaps these people have an agreement with the owners. Fine, post a sign that is visible so people do not waste time and energy setting up only to have to move.

Otherwise we had a very enjoyable trip and thank you to all those who worked so hard to put the event on.

They usually have that area roped off/reserved. Much better camping just below and across the river to the left at Dirty Dozen. Much more room and level.
No dogs out of control over there this year.

Yeah Jim.
The dog policy was/is dogs on leash at all times. Does the policy get broke by everyone from regulars to newbies, yup.

The area where unimog crew camps has been used for years by them and used to be used by a large group of PMC members. Anymore it is sorta just the usual spot wher ethe unimog crew camps. In reality I do believe it is truly first come first serve and unless they had area marked or were declaring the reserved space when you arrived I do think you could have said well, tuff s***, buit then again the mog crew has earned a amount of respect that sorta gives em dibs on that spot.

I agree with Don, come camp across river at Dirty Dozen, you will like it.

Truly sorry to hear that you had such trouble at rubithon. Also hope you found suitable camp site. odd cause the mog crew is usually in camp by then. Typically camp sites are scarce by friday night unless you got a buddy gettin there early and ropin ya off somethin.

No trouble really, just a bit confused by their attitude.

And my only other concern is the dog issue. Who has the liability for stupid dog behavior? I felt like kicking the dog but thought better of it. We moved on.

The wife, my son and I had a very good time. It started off a little shaky.

As stated by others -- the Unimog area should have been roped off. But it's not by the river. It's back in the grove, across from Dirty dozen.

There are several areas where "regulars" have set up over the years. These are the people that are on committee, and volunteer their time/hours/vehicles to put on Rubithon.

The other spot you asked about is where Mudrak and his group set up. Again, in that case, we've been using the area for many years, and come in on the Monday before to set up camp.

There are other spots as well. The area behind the kitchen is usually used by Toys on the Rocks and the Kitchen committee.

As for the dogs -- all were told to have their dogs on a leash. Many ignored this request, and some even got upset about being asked to leash their dogs. I had one guy tell me that the "leash law" states that the dog must be in control, but not on leash. Whatever - It's private property.

Like I said if the place is reserved say so up front. Don't wait for tired folks to begin unpacking 4 days worth of stuff from a 40 and tell them to pack up and leave after they are half way through with the first beer.

And common sense says to leash your stupid dog when there are tons of strangers around. Besides eating our snacks another dog pissed on my trash gunney sack.

So now I know there are clicks that abound and we should ask anywhere we attempt to camp.

It was still fun.

PS - We live in the county and do tens of dozens of hours per year round volunteer work for several land use and other groups.

In general (and I don't think it should be limited to Rubicon Springs), yes, clicks abound. Yes, you should ask if an area is open prior to unpacking.

Where we were set up (down in Camp Mudrak), we saved one spot for a guy still on the trail. It wasn't an issue. I can't speak for the Mog Crew.

There are other clicks as well. Some people get bent out of shape about HAM radio usage. Some people don't like loud campfire groups. Some don't like people who drink. To each their own

As someone who has been bitten by dogs at least a half dozen times in california and over the past 30 years I can say undoubtedly that the law does not allow for a dog to be unleashed and in control by the owners opinion. The animal must be thethered. The word "leash" is not used to specify the type of device because there are many types of restraints for dogs, muzzles, harnesses, ropes, etc......

Once you've kicked a 110lb dog off you your attention to the "leash law " is alot sharper.

Thanks for the response. Somewhere in the TLCA, Rubithon post I previously have apologised for being sharp with someone over the radio. If that was you I apologise again.

Sorry for your having to move your camp Big Jim, With Toy's on the Rocks we have been all over Rubicon Springs for our "base camp" but for the last 13 years or so we have been in the area north of the camp kitchen, we try to get a rope across the area to make sure the whole club can fit, as the group makes it to camp at different intervals and we need to be close to camp to do our chores. Yes a rope or a barrier needs to be put up, ours was similar to Coco's Corner in Baja. On Friday Bill, Manny, Glen and Knorrs and a couple outhers just came off of the trail and needed a camp spot, In my opionion they were more than welcome to stay in our area as we had extra space this year. I also did not like dogs not on a leash and pissing on our tarps, but is is kinda cute when they are begging for a breakfast treat. And a big Thank's to all that helped the Purple Haze keep running right after her heart transplant. (lousy raffle, too many prizes were grouped together in each winning prize) in other words I got skunked........ Well next year? See Ya, John Pardi TLCA#1561 TOTR storekeeper
