My FJ60 has (had) rubber skirts that were attached to the lower inside edge of the front fenders and extended to the frame. They appeared to be some attempt to keep water and dirt out of the engine bay. Now, they are just shaggy remnants. Do these things really make much difference? Any suggestions on readily available material to make replacements would be useful.

Irriigation Hose

I bought 6 feet of a blue irrigation hose at the Quality Supply in Dillon, MT. I cut it lengthwise and made the splash guards out of it. It is a tough vinyl fabric and I am hoping that it will not flap in the wind. Fastened it on with small bolts with fender washers. The only downside so far was the blue color.

Go to any tire store that sells Semi tires, ask for a blown tire tube, they should give it to you for free, they did for me anyway. Stuff is nice and heavy, works great! :)

Another option rubber diamond plate

I picked up some black rubber diamond plate stuff in a roll and cut to fit. We hav a great hardware/everything store in Boulder called McGuckin. I think I got some remnants there...it's almost the same thickness. Look at $OR.com for a picture of that stuff. A bit pricey there, though...

I bet Target or HD/Lowe's might have something similar (not at resourcefull as a blown semi-trailer tube though!)

Anyone have pics, so those of us that haven't seen them can tell what you're talking about?

what did yall attach the home made splash gaurds with?

i bought some of SOR's diamond plate rubber left-overs, and attached them with stainless 1/4-20 bolts. this is of course BEFORE i figures out SOR's horrible frt. terms. the frt. was 3 time the cost of the material.
live and learn...
hammer
btw..the diamond tread looks cool under the wheel, against the bright red shock bootys

Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camera. And, if I did, I would probably not show folks. The blue irrigation hose looks non-cool on the brown truck. I think our Montana mud will solve that. I wish I had done the rubber diamond plate and probably will do it when I get the oil leak fixed and the clutch hydraulic right. Incidently, I attached the stuff with small bolts and fender washers. One nice thing was the you could put it in the engine well with a light behind it and by looking from inside the fender, you could see the holes. I just held the fabric up to the hole and drilled through it. Nevertheless, the burly black diamond plated rubber stuff sounds way cooler.

i like the idea of nutserts instead of clips etc. i think some have used shower liner (the thick stuuf) from home depot etc.

you can also get some some heavy duty rubber material from places like tractor supply and others and make something....

Only 9 years past the original post....

your point grasshopper, er, cricket? Don't these rigs last for ever, but need TLC sometimes? lol
