I need to change a u-joint today so don't have enough time to get one shipped, using search I found the part numbers as confirmed by Beno:
Rear: 04371-36030
Front: 04371-60070
04371-36030 rear, 04371-36031 front
Should be found for $50.00 or less.
Found on Tacoma, Sequoia, 60, 70, 80 series and others
First part number is correct for the rear of an 80 series.

The fronts are: 04371-60070

But, when I called my local dealer they said the front and rear driveshafts use the same part number, 04371-36030. Got the same information from AutoZone on their brand. Is this at all true? If not, what is the difference between front/rear spiders/u-joints? Do I need to make sure to get one of each part number?

I have a failing joint, but not sure whether it is front or rear, so I want to get both just in case before I try to get under it and repair (and then am out of luck for going and getting another).

Thank you!

So, part 60070 looks way small. Got both though, so we'll see.

The major difference, other than size, is that the grease fitting is in the center of the spider instead of the corner. Just doesn't look right, but haven't looked at what is installed very closely yet.

Yes, it does. My second post above is just my surprise that the fronts are so much smaller than the rears. Once again Mud has proven to have the best information.

For the record, Beno was absolutely correct (no surprise). My local dealer was very wrong, they couldn't even find a different part number for the front driveshaft and said the number I quoted was for 2002+ only. AutoZone was also wrong in that they didn't have a part number for the rear and they said their part for the front works for both the front and rear; I suspect their note just means the front and rear u-joints for the front driveshaft. Fortunately I had insisted on the other part (60070) from my dealer based on Beno's comment because it was a front that was DEAD.

THANK YOU BENO and all the other experts here!

You were doubting @beno ?!

I have all my part numbers lines up and I'm not even halfway through and he spits out the rest

Glad I can assist.

There is a reason why folks like CDan and I do what we do... So that the correct information is out there.

We are both creatures of habit and ten digit Toyota part numbers run through us all day long, everyday.

Glad everything worked out.

Regards.

OK... can someone please tell me when you say FRONT vs REAR... does that mean that the REAR drive shaft takes Qty 2 04371-36030 and the FRONT shaft takes Qty 2 04371-60070? Or does each front and rear shaft have one of each???

2 of each.

Front driveshaft: 04371-60070
Rear driveshaft: 04371-60210 (this is the new superseded number)

Great! Thank you.

Bringing this back from the dead.

Baselining my 94' fzj, and want to confirm the above u-joint part numbers, as I am prepping to do these soon.

Pardon the interruption.....carry on.

Awesome!....thanks!

Should the bushings also be changed if the spiders are replaced? If so what part numbers?

For the record, Beno was absolutely correct (no surprise). My local dealer was very wrong,

^^^^^ Yep!

When you have a severe pain in your side, do you go to your doctor....or call your Aunt Lily to see what she thinks? ;)

Sorry, spider bearing not bushing. A picture online seems to show them included in the kit. Sorry for the confusion.

Not sure what you are looking at, perhaps an exploded view on a diagram?

A Universal Joint (sometimes called a spider) will come as an assembly. It will consist of the cross-shaft, a zerk fitting, 4 bearing caps (with needle bearings installed), 4 seals and 4 retainer clips. everything will be assembled (except for the clips).

To my knowledge...no individual parts of a Universal Joint (save for the clips) are available separately.

Thanks. I don’t really have an issue with mine yet but I have 160k on my truck...but eventually I can see this becoming an issue. This may end up being preventative maintenance in the near future.

Over 300K on mine (original U-Joints). No vibration...still going strong. Keep them lubed and they will last a long time.

2 of each.

Rear driveshaft: 04371-60210 (this is the new superseded number)
Can I order OEM U joints for front and back from you, or if not can you recommend a mud member I can ask? Trying to find the best prices...
Thanks:)
