Hi all,

Embarked on my 2 week trip to the Arctic Circle and got one day in and had a problem I hope you can help me diagnose!
After driving 1000KM I shut truck off and it sat 10 min then when I turned it over it lit but ran very low rough idle, wouldn't accept any throttle and then died. I left it 15-20 min and then it started and ran just fine. The second day it did the same thing only while driving...complete loss of power + rough idle then stall. I let it rest 15 min then it started and ran fine for another 400 KM! The next day I drove about 600KM and had NO problem but the ambient air temp was at least 10F cooler than the days where the problem happened. Some additional details....brand new group 31 battery running an ARB 35 fridge and minor incidental electrics (iPhone charger and small inverter). I was going to travel to the Arctic but not until I get this figured out...any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated!!!

Cheers!

What year? Could maybe be a throttle position sensor, if 2003 plus. Did you get bad fuel? Is there somewhere you can pull codes on it? If electronic, it should throw a code.

I was thinking TPS as well, but in my experience that never affected the way the engine was running it just did not respond to throttle, or would bog down a bit, and not go.
I'm fairly new to the UZJ100, but if you don't have any check engine light, I might look at fuel quality like hkeller mentioned. If you can rule out an issue with fuel quality then perhaps the fuel pump might be on its way out.
Be good to check air filter and MAF if you haven't already.

No problem! It is an '06. It has just under 80,000 Mi so pretty low. I have taken it to the Toyota dealer here in Whitehorse but was hoping for some ideas in case the dealer starts trying to randomly change things. It showed a CEL when it stalled but it wasn't persistent so dealer indicated there may not be any codes to read! Thanks for the input, I appreciate it!

Cheers!

Thought about fuel quality but I'm traveling with a buddy and his '05 Tundra with the same 4.7L motor and we've filled up at the same spots and driven in the exact same conditions so I'm thinking its unlikely that. Thanks for the ideas though!

Searching shows similar problems with 06s potentially from a cam position sensor or the emissions related air pump.

Thanks for that! I'm on a limited connection mobile device...any chance you could provide a link to a thread about those issues? Would something like that not trigger a CEL?

Dealer said they saw no codes but checked alternator and it's OK. Their best guess was a MAF issue but with no codes it was only a guess. Not sure what to do at this point...truck ran fine today but I only drove 20-30KM so that doesn't really count. Thanks for the help so far!

Sounds awful close to TPS sensor symptoms, but when my TPS went out, I got codes. The TPS and MAF sensors are cheap and easy to replace. Heck the TPS is a PM item at 100k based on my experience.

I'd try to find a auto parts store that sells the scan gauge II so you can pull your own codes while the issue is actually occurring. That's how I diagnosed my failing TPS sensor.

Go stay at the Airport Chalet. I stayed a week while waiting on parts for the 60. Tell them Trey said hi. At the bar of course.

The error has to occur long enough for the engine to throw a code. My last coil pack failure was like that. I knew I had lost a coil but had to drive aouund moab for 15 minutes before the code set and I knew which one to change.

If it's transient and cold related it could be the throttle motor/throttle plate sticking and freezing up. If they can recreate it for long enough it may throw a clue in the form of a code. Glad you made it to a dealer anyway, hope you can nail it down and carry on. If nothing is found maybe have them clean the maf and throttle body.

Good luck.

I've had the same issues- posted on one of the above referenced threads. Replaced the cam position sensor- no fix. The fact that the Tundra isn't having the same problem would lead me(after reading one of the posts) to look at the difference between the Hundy and the Tundra per the above thread. Please post if and when you get a fix.

This ^ I had a coil pack go out too, and although I instantly knew what it was, I didn't get a code for at least 5 miles of driving.

Hey guys...thanks for your input, I really appreciate it!

The dealer here was of little help as there are no codes for them to follow up on. I read thru the entire thread referenced above on cam position sensor (thanks for the links!) and that sure sounds like the issue I'm having however even I that thread there doesn't seem to be a consensus that a cam position sensor is the culprit. Based on advice from a Toyota Tech friend I cleaned the throttle body (which was filthy) and I've added an anti water agent to my fuel and bought a code reader so we head out to Dawson City tomorrow am. I'm hoping that because the ambient temps will be fairly low the problem won't resurface until we head further south again. I plan on having the cam position sensor checked and replace when (if ) we return! I'll follow up on this thread and the other if I have any definitive conclusion to the problem. Thanks again!

Cheers!

Thanks for the update and good luck with the rest of the trip!
