Went to start the car this evening. I turned the key and the engine turned over just fine, but it wouldn't stop! I even pulled the key out the ignition and it kept turning over.
I finally was able to disconnect the battery and then hit the starter with a hammer a few times (not a good practice I know), reconnected the battery and was able to start the truck normally and get back home.
Anyone else have this problem before? Assuming it is the starter, does it need to be completely rebuilt? Is it just a stuck solenoid or part that can be replaced easily or maybe a relay?
As an aside, how much damage might I have done by hitting it with a hammer (can't really generate too much swing under the truck but I wasn't gentle)? That is, are the starters in our trucks robust enough for a little abuse?
Thx in advance!
