Are our cv axles interchangeable with any other Toyota models? I may have busted by axles and don't have a spare but some friends have spares with them. I am gettin a significant "clunk" when I am driving coming from the front. I haven't the faintest idea what it is. I will need to get home at the end of the day. Anyone please offer ideas.

Ok. I just pulled the front driveshaft. I am getting no power to the rear drive shaft. When I push the cdl button it makes a horrific grinding sound.

I pulled the front driveshaft because it seemed as if I was getting a shudder from the front diff. The truck would bind up every few feet of forward movement. I thought that if I pulled the front drive shaft I would be able to power the rear wheels.

If it is the front... pull the front drive shaft. Then pull both ds and ps hub flanges. Put plastic bags or duct tape over opening. Reinstall wheels, lock Cdl and drive home in rear wheel drive mode. If you don't pull the hub flanges, everything still rotates...

When you say that you push the cdl and hear a noise...where is that noise?

When I pull the drive flange am I leaving the locknut in place.

Ok. In the pic am I removing the grease cap snap ring, cone washers, flange, and gasket leaving the lock nut and lock lock washer in place?

Yes. The flange has teeth on the inside. These mesh with the cv. With the drive shaft pulled the wheels via that flange will turn the cv's and front diff.

Just pull the flanges, nothing else. Cover opening with plastic bags or duct tape to keep debris from contaminating the wheel bearings. Put wheels back on.

In the photo the first 4 things needs to be removed and leave out. Grease cap, snap ring, (all the bolts that holds the flange and gasket.

Cover it up like mxndrnks suggested and you should be good. You will have a free spinning front end at this point.

How exactly do I remove the flange? I took off everything from the snapping and only have the flange itself to remove.

Make sure you got the cone washers off. they are behind the nuts and washers.

Once those are off I just used a chisel. But you can use a flat head screwdriver.

Got that. Now where do I Put the tape?

^^^yup. Cover the opening. I would run the tape past the wheel lugs. That way your wheel presses and holds the tape in place when installed.

Thank you to everyone who commented and helped. I am now able to get home myself.

excellent! Might want to tape up the hole over the cv. Use the non-sticky side of the tape against the cv then tape it closed......

Let us know what the damage is!

In place of tape / soda bottle, can one use the center cap and call it a day? I would think it would be possible so long as I wasn't traveling in wet or dusty conditions no?

I am concerned that by putting a piece of tape backward ( non sticky side toward axle) that it may somehow catch and then cause the rest of the tape to get pulled off. The axle seems not to be flush with the surface of the rim (wheel area around hub that I have tape on currently). The axle seems to protrude beyond there that's why I elected not to cover it. I would love to see how people place a soda bottle over it.
