I was fiddling with the rear seat screens the other day and thinking about how poor 480p resolution looks when trying to navigate a Fire Stick. And then I realized the actual on-screen menus don't look that bad. The text is actually fairly sharp.

And then it dawned on me: I think our dumpy screens are actually 1080p, and the head unit is limiting everything to 480p. What a whip! Can anybody else confirm? I can't find any specifications online.

My '17 owner's manual lists the monitor specs using the HDMI input as "480p, 576p, VGA". Certain block text can look good even with fairly low res. From what I've seen in a variety of experiments is not HD video. I suspect Toyota would have not put money into making part of the system better than another. The low res was one additional reason I was so happy to remove them.
