Is it ok to mount a rooftop tent on two crossbars on LC200, on my previous car I had a rack but on my new car a rack is not really necessary, just want to carry a tent, Your opinion appreciated.

Depends on the tent I suppose. Do you have a tent already?

It's light enough, you could probably be fine with some Yakima bars. No need for a full roof rack.

If you can get to the fasteners the stock rack should be fine to carry it. The stock bars are reinforced on the inside.
Unfortunately they do arc a bit and space is tight under them.

I have a set of Malone crossbars that I've had my roofnest on for the past 3 years between two cars. I've had it on my LC for the past year and 15k miles without any issues. You'll probably need aftermarket crossbars due to the space needed to tighten down the tent. My crossbars add additional 3-4 inches and I can barely stick my hand through to tighten the bolts into the crossbars.

Will the stock rails really hold a tent and a few people? I understand putting different load bars attached to them. We are talking lets say 400 pounds for 2 people up there inside the tent? Very curious on this one.

Yes the rails will hold the weight, stock crossbars I wouldn't put my money on them.

Here's the cross section of the stock cross bar. It's plenty strong.

The stock cross bars are actually very strong. They are also designed for some flex, as that likely aids long term durability.

Problem you'll find with using them for the Autohome, is that the tent will move up/down, particularly on the freeway. I would add an additional OEM crossbar or two. Definitely two paired up forward to control movement.

I had my James Baroud Grand Raid XXL on the stock cross bars and rack and had absolutely no issues. The tent was so massive that I also put .5 inch slats on the rails so the weight of the tent was distributed on rails and cross bars… looked silly but worked great. I have sense put on a front runner rack but only because I wanted a roof rack :). And as others have said… it was a major pain to tighten everything give the clearance… I bought an extra long wrench… annoying but it did the trick!

To everyone having trouble bolting their roof tents due to how close the crossbars are to the roof: you might purchase an extra long handled ratcheting wrench of the appropriate size. By standing on the tailgate Youll be able to easily reach the rear bolts for the roof tent…and by reaching through the sunroof You can easily reach the front ones.

I’ve run this exact setup with my Maggiolina and been through multiple phases and bar types. As others have said, they will hold the weight but getting to the nuts and bolts isn’t easy. It’s one thing to reach the nut with the appropriate wrench, but another to hold the top of the bolt in place long enough to tighten the nut all the way up. The nylon inserts do a good job of holding it in place once it’s on but also make it difficult to tighten. The bolts are extra long so it requires a lot of patience and someone with skinny arms. if you’re satisfied with the way they work after getting it attached and want to keep using the stock bars, I’d suggest you cut the bolts shorter as they’re sized for many different attachment options.

Thank for the advice, specially shortening the bolts, very good idea. probably will buy Rhino rack crossbars.

I went to Yakima bars and it helped but it’s still tight. I ended up getting a rack eventually. That didn’t make it easier but it did allow me to also mount an awning.

Yes to shortening the bolts. I did that.
I also put the bottom brackets that go around the crossbars into a vice and hit them with a sledge hammer…now they curve/bend around the crossbars…which allowed me to cut the bolts extra short.

Also, if you put a drop of 3-in-1 oil on the bolt threads when you install the locknuts, it should go easier. Maxtrax pin mounts suggested this with their bolt/locknut and it worked well.

I ran an Alucab on 80/20 bars. Cheap and versatile and with t nuts you can add all sorts of accessories

worked well but I had to create my own bracket.
