Howdy partners, im thinking about changing out my Toyota roof rack for something more user friendly. i have seen the ARB, GOBI, ALL PRO and WILDERNESS. are there any more out there?
thanx in advance. feel free to post a pic or add some feedback.:)

Be aware they can be a B!TCH to take off...and there's a good chance you'll destroy the old rack taking it off. Plus some have had leak issues after pulling off the stock rack.

X2 I went to buy a stock rack a year ago and we got all but 2 bolts out and then they broke the 2 hole thread attachments inside the roof. The guy had to take out the liner on the inside to get to these pieces. Needless to say I still don't have a roof rack..:)

Same here. Mangled the factory junk. Just mangled it. Worst factory-installed item I've ever had the pleasure of removing. But I did get the payoff of having a complete Yakima load bar system installed on Yakima tracks and towers.

Thanx guys. I will be careful if I remove the O.E. rack. Otherwise I might take Inkpot's advice and rig up something with the O.E. rack. I like the Gobi Stealth the best so far. But sure is pricey!!!!!

What is it that you are wanting the rack to do?
There are plenty of aftermarket items to mount Hi-Lifts, shovels, and axes on the stock rack if that is what you are looking to do.

For ideas on that, take a look at my rig buildup thread in my sig file below.

I personally dig the stock rack.

Added at Port of entry not an Factory Install.

The OEM is not a bad rack IMO...I like and am keeping mine. Plus, it's nice and light. They seem to REALLY screw it down at the port and I have a friend who removed his, destroyed it and has had leaks ever since (he wanted it OFF so it would fit in his garage and put "plugs" in the holes I believe).

I just remember him saying it took 3 hours, cussing the entire time...

 Yeah, something like that.

Turns out, at least on mine, they used too much Loctite *AND* over-torqued the damn bolts on top of that. You're bound to thrash the damn brackets trying to get those bolts out of there, I'm telling you. That wouldn't be so bad by itself, if only you didn't have to remove the headliner to retrieve everything that dropped onto the top of it after the bolts snap!

Live and learn!

Go for the Gobi

I went with the Gobi Stealth and I couldn't be happier with it. The fit and finish is incredible, it is prewired for lights and the Piaa lights they sell with it front and rear look like they were made for it. It holds 300 pounds so you can drag the lawnchair up and kick it in style and with the included deflector there is no wind noise.

ps. It comes with the most detailed instructions on the PLANET too.

Oh man, I just noticed you have a TRD too. You have to go for the Gobi now. It looks SMOKING on the TRD. They have the best hi lift jack mount I have ever seen for it too. Great locking mechanism and it actually sits just a hair below the already very low profile rack.
And if you like the ladder look, it really adds a gret unique look.
